manual belt tensioners: how often? what's your "rule"?

So I've replaced the stock squealers with some gatorback belts. However, I've had to retighten the belts every 1,500 miles or so.

How often do you guys tighten them down?

Do you have a rule?

What I've been doing is....
-if the voltage needle drops w' headlights or windshield wipers on, it's time to tighten the belts
-if the "low battery" light comes on, and the truck is on the verge of stalling, it's time to tighten the belt
-if you hear any kind of squealing, it's time to tighten the belt
-if the power steering stop working all of a sudden, it's time to tighten the belt

Sound right?
