Mechanic suggests buying a new computer for my truck- Do i really need one??

Hi everyone, for the past month or so, my 1998 V6 3.0L Ranger has been having an issue where its transmission skips at speeds above 75 mph, even more so above 80. I took it to the mechanic, and he came up with the conclusion that its an issue with the computer on my truck, and that I need to get a new computer, which will cost me about $600 (he says the computer for my truck is obsolete). Is there a cheaper way I can deal with this issue, such as resetting the computer or somehow getting the computer re programmed? do you think the mechanic is trying to rip me off? Thanks in advance for your help!

Note: he said the issue is that the truck is not shifting into 4th gear, therefore, for the meantime he suggests not going above 55mph. Also, no check engine light is on.

New computer? Geez, mechanics will say anything these days.

Have you only talked to this one shop?

It honestly sounds mechanical and not electrical

Might want to get a 2nd opinion. Try a shop that specializes in transmissions...

Thanks for the imput you two. True, seems like they will say anything! I did get a second opinion from a transmission shop and they said it was the overdrive belt in the transmission (ouch!). Never going to that other place again though! lol
