Never ending Squeak!!

aight my friends ranger has a major issue. She replaces her belt like every 10k miles!! shes replaced the idler pully and the squeak is still there. also her engine overheats on occasion, not always but sometimes. Im stumped. any ideas??

RangerMuse 09-09-2008 11:59 AM

What about the belt tensioner (sp) maybe its whats causing things to wear out

jtslmn720 09-09-2008 12:02 PM

its a ford? mine ALWAYS squeaks when its wet even with the "miracle gatorback belt"

on our other ford, the squeak wasnt the belt, it was something in the engine that spins for the tachometer and it was worn out

Ranger928 09-09-2008 01:12 PM

Is it a continuous squeak? Mine did that for months, but right now it just has a little squeak every 10 seconds or so...and i cant figure it out either. Plus when my CB is on, every time i hear the squeak, a quick high pitch tone comes through the cb.

Anyone have idea's about what would do that?

mlw20lu 09-09-2008 02:22 PM

yea ill have her change it out. i never thought about the tensioner. that would explain the belt wear, squeaking and all the belt driven auxilary problems too! thanks alot.

is the squeak coming from the rear of the engine... take a good listen and be sure because if it is then its your cam synchro gear on the way out...

If the CB radio squeaks, its probably picking up some electrical static. Could be the alternator going out.

Ranger928 09-09-2008 10:35 PM

I've tried to find where its coming from. And it is around the alternator. So that might be it then. Is there anyway to test an alternator or do i have to wait until it dies?

the cam syncro, will it make a noise at idle with no throttle or like 1/2 to wide open throttle?? or under a load with when i really hear the chirping

when the belt is off, spin all the pulleys seperately and listen for the squeak to make sure one of the pullies isnt to blame

What year ranger is it. mine is a 99 and I replaced all the pulleys and the belt and it ended up being the syncro. My wife got it changed at the dealer while I was in Afghanistan and no more squeaks.

I have had the exact same problem. I have changed the belt, changed the idler pulley, changed the tensioner, and i have the gatorback in my garage waiting to be put on. But i spotted that my tensioner is kind of spinning cockeyed causing the belt to be pushed forward on the tensioner pulley a little; causing premature wear on the belt. I will probably have to order a how new tensioner arm assembly. But until then, putting the gatorback belt on should solve the problem for another 5-10k miles

I read some time last year where someone placed a shim washer on the locator stud on the tensioner to correct the angle of it . IIRC it solved his squeek problem by letting the belt run true on the pulley.

What do you mean "letting the belt run true on the pulley"

Think of it this way ;
Take a tire standing up straight the way it would be on the truck.
Imagine that as the pulley.

Now think of the ground the tire is standing on as the belt.

Now tilt the top of the tire while looking at the contact point between it and the ground.

One edge of the tire will be in contact with the ground ,the other will not.
