Oil pressure gauge dropped
2002 Ford ranger 3.0L
So figured out the cranking portion however now another great issue has come up! (Gotta love getting swiped by a under the influence driver. :/ So after the work was done to my truck I was leaving my shop today, and on the way home noticed that my signal bulb went out. So got out to see if it was an electrical issue, lights work bulb is out. No big deal. Put it back in drive and got to a stop again pressure gauge started jumping then completely dropped With the check gauge light. Being 5 minutes frik the house I sent it cause I didn’t hear anything different. Got in the driveway and the engine had a tapping sound, so of course grabbed the scope sounded like a lifter.... so I immediately cut it off. Here’s the weird part..... let it sit for 10 minutes cut it back on gauge was working fine and the ticking went away. I’m stuck at what it could be. Not sure if it’s the pump going out, or if it’s the pressure gauge.... just find it weird the tapping stopped.... any ideas? Only thing physically that’s been done recently was the coil pack and the crank sensor. |
Well... the fact that the oil pressure gauge dropped which also include lifter tapping tells me it isn't the gauge. Seems you actually lost oil pressure. Usually when that happens, it means something mechanically broke. Cam sensor shaft turns the oil pump and is the usual culprit. A spun main or rod bearing can cause pressure drop but it has a distinct sound associated with such. Could be something simple like a chunk of debris was sucked up the oil pump intake and fell back out when the truck was turned off, or the oil filter is failing. Just some things you may want to check. Oh! and of course, make sure there is oil actually in it.

A drop under 5psi(oil switch setting) would cause most lifters to make noise, not just a "tick or two"
I would replace the oil pressure switch on speculation, not an expensive part, its behind passenger side head on the block next to bell housing The instrument cluster turn signal indicators are both on Connector A on the back of the cluster, oil pressure signal wire is also on Connector A..........................only common denominator, not likely but it is something in common |
