Peformance with dumped Muffler
ok so ive always heard that having tailpipes over 2.25" can reduce backpressure too much and cause a lack in performance and isnt good for the engine. So what about the people that have their exhaust dumped right after the muffler. Theoretically wouldnt having a 4 inch tailpipe cause more backpressure than the dumped tips yet its so common to have your exhaust dumped. Not saying ill get 4" tailpipes but i dont want to dump my exhaust and lose millage or what little power the 3.0 has.

backpressure and velocity are related, but not the same thing.
Removing tailpipes on the monster 3.0 is probably negligible. I have seen a 414 windsor lose 8 rwhp putting tailpipes back on but that was on a motor already making ~520 with a tremec. Pick whichever sounds best to you. |
I have a dumped straight pipe with 35's on a auto 3.0 :). Not that great haha, I went from stock exhaust to a dumped flowmaster 40, lost a lil low end power, then went to a dumped straight pipe and lost a lil more...Now I can't notice it but before I could, you get more power running it all the way out the back... But I like the loudness cause Im young so its worth it haha

you dont lose anything, Im dumped and my truck is the same as yours.
There was no difference in performance or milage when I had a gibson catback on my truck and now this flowmaster 40 dumped. |
The stock manifolds and the array of cats followed by a muffler are what make the back pressure. The piping after the muffler is mainly to route exhaust gases out the rear of the vehicle. If it looks bad, cut it off.

Im not putting my muffler on until spring when the salts gone so i still have time to figure it out
No matter what you do your exhaust is never going to flow faster than the smallest point in the system. This is true with air, water, anything that flows in a pipe. |
my muffler needs replacing so i was jsut going to get a new intermediate pipe and muffler and just put a turn down on the muffler. Im just giving examples of peoples advice when others have asked about getting a full cat back system out the rear and using 3" pipes.

This is my opinion and I dont have any prof other than my experiences with my truck.
I have had duals both magnaflow and flowmaster. I also have had a single in single out borla system. All of those systems have different backpressures and flow rates. IMO Flowmaster is the absolute worst. The flow is horrible worse than stock. Magnaflow duals were ok but duals in general dont flow well on our trucks. If it was a single system is would work great... My borla is a single system that runs all the way back and dumps just past the axle. nice and quiet and flows great. it is 2.25 the whole way and i really like it. Never go higher than 2.5" on a ranger. before or after the muffler, unless its the tip that wont matter. duals after the muffler never more than 2.25... A Magnaflow or Borla SI/SO 2.25" or 2.5" is perfect for both the 3.0 and 4.0 |

I have a Borla as well with 2.25 piping and it is perfect. It's not "loud" but can definitely be heard and gave me a little better pickup. You will be happy with it.
same here I get comments all the time how good mine sounds when im on it yet its so quiet you cant hear it idle. i love it. |
mine will probably be a lightning style exhaust so quiet at idle and low RPMs is a good thing.
