Performance upgrades

Hey guys, i just recieved a ford ranger and am finding myself loving it more and more each day. One problem i have though is lack of pick up. All i have done to it so far is a cold air intake, and i noticed a difference with that, but am looking for a little more pull throughout the RPM range. Does anyone have any ideas that won't run me broke?
thankyou
oh, and it is a 2003 with just over 70k miles

Tuner is usually the best bang for the buck.

i've read about thoughs, but have heard they can be hard to use and a lot of people have caused permantent damage, could this be true?

That's true with some vehicles but does not apply to a Ranger. They are very easy to operate.

I wouldn't be worried about it... even the off the shelf tuners are good. Not sure what else to call them but the ones you buy from Superchips, Diablosport, etc. that you can just buy and plug in. I have the Diablosport and have had no issues with it!

i will diffenitly look into one of these.
what kind of damage do they do to fuel economy?

FULLSCALE Nov 13, 2011 11:23 AM

No worse at all, depending on how you drive it can actually get better!

its a 3.0...its gonna be slow

Rapala Nov 24, 2011 02:28 PM

Check the sig.... Its been a long time since Ive been on here since I picked up my E39. It will be slow, its not built to go fast just be reliable and dependable. I still want to do something crazy with mine but cant justify the price and loss of reliability. Stick with bolt ons and you will be safe.

Underdrive crank pulley is a good place to start.

Agreed pulleys and a tuner are a good easy start. But I gotta say the 1.7 Rockers and shorty headers made the most gain in TQ. and HP. on my 3.0.

Except for the spray that is...:scool:

I agree with what everyone has said here... I suppose the only question I would have is what is your long term goal here? Are you looking to pull trailers, or are you looking to score in the 1320. If all you are looking for is a little more pull, I would go with the roller rockers... From there, you can look into a lower (crank) pulley upgrade, and then maybe some more agressive cams...

Kris03 Nov 30, 2011 02:25 PM

what would be the lower crank pulley upgrade?

fourlitrepro Feb 1, 2014 08:33 PM

the air intake is a GREAT start but if wanna beat the bank and the guy beside you, i would advise you to buy 1.8 Bolt On roller rockers from Tom Morana Racing Engines you would gain 18hp + 30ft lbs torque , and you can install it in your driveway in about 2-3 hours =) if you want more advice call or visit the url i provided
