half way through 2k trip trk started sputtering at low rpm/idle and after a while of this pulled into a gas station to fill up and now it wont start its a 97or98 I am almost ceritn that it has the 3.0L and know it has over 200,000 miles the motor cranks but does not start any sugestions (it belongs to a relative I dont know all the history yet)

just recived update it is running but will not idle in gear they have to give it some gas to keep it running
latest update slowed down/stopped and it died and wont restart

The sputtering and such makes me think a fuel system problem. Make sure they check fuel pressure. Your fuel pressure should be 45 to 65 psi on a flex fuel 3.0 and 55 to 75 on anything else.

Make sure they try and get a decent vacuum reading too. 15 to 22 inches of vacuum.

battery is still charged geting lower due to repetitive attempt to start
had to trailer it home still didnt start when we unloaded I will look into the fuel system this weekend I thank it might be an issue with timing though crank sensor or sompthing it sounds like it might be backfireing when we attempt to start it
thanks for the help
