I want it to be LOUD!!!
I have an I have an '01 Ranger EDGE with the 3.0 Vulcan, and I want to make the exhaust louder. I already have FlowMaster 40 classic with the pipe cut off and turned down right out of the muffler... It's nice, but it could be louder.
Let me clarify..... I want to make peoples internal organs quiver.
I want to be OBNOXIOUS!
I want bone-rattling, jaw-dropping, bowel-loosening, ear-destroying, window-shattering noise. I don't care if it sounds good... As long as it's LOUD. I want people to curse my name to the very heavens when I start my truck at 03:00 AM to go to work. I want to make people run in terror. But, not any kind of loud will do. It must be as if Zeus himself pressed his butt to the ground and let one rip. But I'd also like to pass smog.
Any ideas?

get a V8
cuz the only way you're gonna get the loud you're describing is a big v8 w/ some nice headers and good exhaust... or do it the stupid and illegal way and cut your exhaust off... but your 3.0 is never going to be as loud as you've described.
when i was swapping in my new motor, we ran it w/o the exhaust system hooked back up to see how loud it was... i wasn't impressed.
my f150, though, with 3" pipes to 3" glasspacks is the kind of loud you're describing. but that's a 7.5l gas v8.

Just one!?!? I have six of them... I think I could spare more than one. I was thinking about doing an exhaust cut-out system behind the cats and before the muffler......... That or I know a guy who can hook me up with a 351ci v8 for $1900 installed...... But I want to pay off my truck first.

I read in a magazine that that is actually legal.

Quick question, why do you want a truck that loud? usually the type of sound you're looking for, will result in some serious back pressure loss, and torque, especially in a v-6. For a nice tough sound, go with the Flowmaster. Not only is this muffler legal, it can also help in the miles per gallon area a little which seems to be the best route considering how high gas prices have and will go up. I highly doubt the guy who is going to give you an inspection sticker (that is if you do have to have an inspection sticker required in your state) will even look at it without the cats and no muffler. Best way to go is a nice cat back exhaust system.

No pics right now... Unlike most people, my vehicle isn't my passion... It's nothing more than a tool. Therefore... I have as many pictures of it as I do of my table-saw. I'll try to add some to my profile though... I just got all the spray-paint off, and it's nice and shiney now. Anyone know where I can get a dirt cheap tailgate for my beast?

I'm also working on mounting a 15 million candlepower spot light in the back of my truck to get people to NOT tailgate or drive behind me with their hi-beams on. Train horn... Have it. I want to replace it with a fog horn. I'm slowly, but surely, turning my truck into the road-warior beast from hell. If you live in LA and see a blue EDGE (with or without tagging on the sides) and no tailgate....... Beware.
