manual ----> automatic?

Is it possible to switch my truck over to automatic? I personally love driving a stick, but my wife can't do it. She can drive it if life depends on it, but we've had the Ranger for over two years and she's only ever driven it a few times. She just isn't comfortable driving it being manual. And I'm tired of hearing about it! haha. Buying a new vehical/trading my current Ranger is out of the question.

My friend and I will do all the work ourselves in his dads shop, so all I need to know is it possible? If so, what parts are needed? How can I switch my truck to automatic!

Thanks a bunch.

My truck is a 1999 Sport, 3.0, 4x4, standard cab, manual tranny. All stock and original.

Haha, I want to do the exact opposite. Too bad I'm in California and this is my daily driver that I have to use for work or I'd switch you.

Just about ANYTHING is possible. Switching to auto can be done, I've done it on a couple cars but they were simple race cars. Someone will chime in and help you more. I dont know what it would involve particlarly with our trucks. Good luck with the swap!

Going from auto to manual is the difficult task. Manual to auto should just be a matter of swapping drivelines and taking out the clutch pedal. That is, unless you want a stereing column shifter...then things might get complicated.

either way is freakin complicated, and totally not worth the cost/time involved/etc imo.

not only do you have to switch the entire transmission, delete the clutch, and add column shifter, but you have to switch the vehicle computer (PCM) and everything.

I have done the conversion and here a list of the major stuff that you would need.
  • Transmission with the correct bell housing for your engine and the correct tailhousing and output shaft (2WD or 4WD). It also needs to be from a compatible year since the PCM controls both the engine and trans.
  • Torque converter and flex plate
  • Engine/trans wiring harness
  • Automatic PCM from the same year
  • Transmission tunnel floor plate
  • Shift cable
  • Complete automatic steering column or all the parts to convert your manual column to automatic - shifter, shifter lock parts, plastic trim, etc.
  • PRND21 indicator for cluster.
  • Automatic pedal and pivot (or just saw the clutch pedal off the manual pivot)
  • Clutch Pedal Position Switch jumper
  • Possible wiring changes in the dash harness for the O/D OFF light and the O/D cancel switch.
  • Possible starter.

If possible, pull everything from the same donor - to avoid hassles, choose a donor with the same year, engine displacement and drive (2WD or 4WD) as your truck.

I believe Wayne swapped in a 700R4 trans to replace is ever replacing 5spd manual. Things needed: Advance Adapters ford to chevy trans adaptor, maybe tailshaft modding.....but that was done on a 2wd I believe...4x4 would be a little more difficult.
