Temp in reasonable range?
So I bought a very nice 98 Ranger XLT, 3.0, Auto with a 150K on the clock. Truck was impeccably cared for with oil changes every 3K, and trans fluid changes every 30K. All required/scheduled maintenance performed on time, so yeah, a really decent little truck that runs and drives great. So since I wanted to keep a close eye on the things that are important I use one of the Bluetooth OBD II devices with Torque. I noticed the temp reads between 198-205 on the highway, but the dash gauge never varies from just under half. Just checking to make sure this is normal, as I'm quite aware the 3.0 is an all aluminum engine, and my Ram is a diesel so it doesn't even pop the thermostat until 190-195 and would almost run dry in the cooler weather. So basically I really like this little truck and I would very much like to make sure this is a safe range and I don't need to worry about it. I have changed all the fluids, emptied the coolant, ran a chemical flush, then back flushed the whole system before replacing the coolant. Plan on doing the electric fan mod, just need to get to the salvage yard to pick up the Benz fans, and get that done.
I tried using the search for the answer, but it seems at best difficult, but I di find a couple of posts stating they should be in the 160 ish range, so just lookig for some good advise with this.
Thanks for any and all info everyone,
Casey

Ranger's used the 3.0l OHV Vulcan engine, cast iron, block and heads, just FYI
Ford's 3.0l DOHC Duratec engine was aluminum
I think you may just have an ECT sensor glitch, that's the temp you see on OBD2 reader, its from ECT sensor
The dash board temp gauge uses a Sender, and gauge's 1/2 way mark is 205degF, so if its just under 1/2, as it should be, than ECT sensor is probably just off by a few deg which won't hurt anything
You can test with an IR temp reader at some point

Thanks for the details, and sanity check. This makes me feel much better as the temps seemingly high, are actually right within the acceptable range now that I have more information. I'll look into swapping out that ECT sensor just to make sure I have the most accurate data and keep an eye on the temps along with any other relevant data I can log with the program. A handy piece of software for free or very little cost, especially since it can be used on multiple vehicles with no extra costs.
Thank you again for the response and input. It is very much appreciated,
