Trans codes PO733 PO734 PO735
Trans codes PO733 PO734 PO735
Hey all. Here's what I have....
2003 Ford Ranger Tremor Edition 4x2 Automatic 4R44E Transmission
I rebuilt the engine after the oil pump went out at 168k. Spun main bearing. It now had 182k.
I replace the shortblock with a 5800 mile Taurus 3.0 and used it's heads. I used Felpro gaskets and ALL Motorcraft parts including injectors and waterpump. There are no aftermarket parts on this engine other than the gasket set. I've manually flushed the trans myself 3 times since 26k.....when I took ownership in 2005.
I used Bluedriver to find the codes and wow.....what a obd2 reader!I have no Drive but can start out in 1st and 2nd then go into Drive. I have NO reverse. There was no warning other than the OD light flashing the day before with some rough shifting due to limp in mode. Then finally I lost the above gearing.
I've heard that it could be a solenoid so I was gonna put a new one in. Of course if I pull the pan and see a ton of metal, I'll stop and go looking for a used one. LOL.
What do you all think? Please....tell me some situations and you outcomes.
Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome to the forum
2003 Ranger 3.0l should have the 5R44E, but same trans as 4R
2001 and up used 5R
P0733 - Gear 3 Incorrect ratio
P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect ratio
P0735 - Gear 5 Incorrect ratio
No mention of solenoids, and these codes mean computer is not seeing trans changing gears
Computer could have used any of these if it was a solenoid related problem:
P0745 Pressure Control Solenoid Malfunction
P0746 Pressure Control Solenoid Performance or Stuck Off
P0747 Pressure Control Solenoid Stuck On
P0748 Pressure Control Solenoid Electrical
P0749 Pressure Control Solenoid Intermittent
P0750 Shift Solenoid A Malfunction
P0751 Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck Off
P0752 Shift Solenoid A Stuck On
P0753 Shift Solenoid A Electrical
P0754 Shift Solenoid A Intermittent
P0755 Shift Solenoid B Malfunction
P0756 Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stock Off
P0757 Shift Solenoid B Stuck On
P0758 Shift Solenoid B Electrical
P0759 Shift Solenoid B Intermittent
P0760 Shift Solenoid C Malfunction
P0761 Shift Solenoid C Performance or Stuck Off
P0762 Shift Solenoid C Stuck On
P0763 Shift Solenoid C Electrical
P0764 Shift Solenoid C Intermittent
P0765 Shift Solenoid D Malfunction
P0766 Shift Solenoid D Performance or Stuck Off
P0767 Shift Solenoid D Stuck On
P0768 Shift Solenoid D Electrical
P0769 Shift Solenoid D Intermittent
P0770 Shift Solenoid E Malfunction
P0771 Shift Solenoid E Performance or Stuck Off
P0772 Shift Solenoid E Stuck On
P0773 Shift Solenoid E Electrical
P0774 Shift Solenoid E Intermittent
P0785 Shift/Timing Solenoid Malfunction
P0786 Shift/Timing Solenoid Range/Performance
P0787 Shift/Timing Solenoid Low
P0788 Shift/Timing Solenoid High
So the Codes the Computer does NOT use are as important as the codes it does use
When you lose Reverse it means pressure inside the trans has dropped, reverse requires highest pressure to engage, 150+ PSI
And pressure build up causes gears to shift, so if pressure is low then Drive may not engage gears or will be slow to engage but manually shifting will get engagement but maybe not shifting.
Everything in an automatic is run by pressure, the solenoids are there to make smoother shifting and better MPG by gear selection using RPM and Speed
If you get leaky seals or gaskets pressure starts to drop as it drops clutches slip and so do bands
The Valve body has most of the gaskets and seals, so you may be able to replace it and the seals but it is a maybe, without a rebuild it might be a waste of time, not money because you would replace valve body in any case, newer ones have bonded gaskets which help prevent gasket blow out
