truck jerking

hey guys not sure if I'm in the right spot, but today when i was driving my truck started to jerk a little, i noticed while going up hill there wasn't much power and my overdrive light flashes, is the over drive on or off when the O/D OFF light is on?

i read on another site that it may be spark plugs any ideas??

When your O/D light flashes it usually means there is an issue with your transmission. I highly doubt there is an issue with your spark plugs.

How many miles? What year? 2 wheel or 4x4? These will help answer any question.

its got 88000 2 wheel drive i just bought it like a month ago just got it registered today and now this happened, i only notice it some times also do you no if the od off light should be on or off when driving in the city no towing

Fuel filter

1996DangerRanger 03-23-2012 04:38 PM

Mine does it too... it's a manual. Sometimes it runs good and strong, and other times it feels low on power, then suddenly snaps up to attention and goes like it should.

Figure fuel filter might be it, since this Ranger saw more lack of maintenance than most...

I don't think so my od light keeps flashing and from what I no that is a trany problem :/ has anyone that has had this problem got it fixed and it never happens again?

1996DangerRanger 03-23-2012 11:28 PM

Ah... missed that part. Don't drive too much with that o/d light flashing... might end up costing you a trans rebuild. It's hard on an auto, kinda like towing in o/d and causing the trans to 'hunt' for a gear.

Maybe a connection is corroded or loose?

Have you checked for codes? It might (hopefully) be a very simple fix.

My ranger did the O/D Flashing, but I saw nor felt any difference in power. 1st time it did it was at 65mph and -30 degrees out on a 200 mile round trip. Going thru a Canyon is when it stopped. 2nd time it happened I was cruising 30 mph 90 degrees out. Again no change in power.

She did start shifting funny while stop and go traffic though, the run through the canyon I maintained speed till the motel which she stayed off all night and well, well into the next day in -30 to 5 degrees, started up and ran just fine shifted fine. that was 3 years ago on that 1 and the 2nd time was 4 years ago and I still have no issues.

Could it be the control box on side of transmission?

1996DangerRanger 03-27-2012 07:57 PM

Maybe, try checking connections (especially ground wires) for corrosion and clean them as necessary.

If that doesn't fix it, try to find a known good control box from a junkyard. Then swap them out and see if that fixes it.

It doesn't sound like the transmission has any major issues with it. I'd look at electrical connections and transmission related electrical components first.

Hope you find the issue, and hope it is something stupid simple and easy to fix.

Well I hooded up my obdii and it gave me an incorrect gear ratio error code I'm thinking speed sensor thing is there is an input sensor and an out put sensor I don't no which one might be causing the problem I'm gonna buy the out put sensor today if I get time to run to ford after work I'll let u guys. I of it fixes anything

01prerunner 03-28-2012 09:58 AM

o/d light of death.....my trans wont shift out of 1st without letting of the gas....still cant figured it out....i hope its something simple....good luck

mitchellkend 03-28-2012 01:48 PM

you need to get a diagnostics done the "light of death" it can be something as small as a sensor to as big as the tranny dieing, i bought an obdii and as far as i no right now my vss is faulty its a 43$ replacement

1996DangerRanger 03-28-2012 03:21 PM

VSS is something that can cause that. Since you said yours is faulty, just replace it. It probably will fix it.

FMD 03-28-2012 07:36 PM

I know what it is... (i think) My dealership told me that I was imagining it, till the shop manager took it home, and spilled coffee all over his white shirt the next day.

If its what I think it is, it wont throw a code. Nor will their 'push the red button when it acts up' box record anything out of the ordinary.

What it is, is a solenoid, on the torque converter, temporarily engaging and disengaging the TC. The part is like $40. Not a clue how to fix it as mine was done under warranty. It also took 9 months for them to find the problem.
