Whats a good tuner anyones found for this motor. Looking at the SCT just wanna know if I have more options

I have the SCT Pro Racer package which works great. I think they are one of the better options for Rangers.

Do you have an auto trans?

It's a stick would that matter or not for the tuner?

Ive been looking into tuners but I have read a lot of things like: They dont increase power, they do change factory shift points in the auto trans, Some You have to take to a Tuner specialist just to get your specific truck tuned.

From what I have read, I dunno If I want to spring for a tuner for the price. Ive never used a Tuner, I am interested in buying one for the 3.0L IF I can get some results out of it. Otherwise it is a waste of money to me.

it will wake your truck up. i was on 33s when i got mine and it was a pretty big difference even just on 87 octane tune

They do increase mid-range power but not peak power.
They do change factory shift points but it is something that the tuner needs to do.

You don't have to take your truck to get tuned if it is stock, there are tuners who specialize in Rangers who can do it over E-Mail.

IMO it is not worth it with a 3.0 and Manual. If you have an Auto then you have more to gain for what its worth. If I had a 3.0 I would buy under-drive pullies before a tuner.

There is a good stickied thread by wyndropthl in the 4.0 section about the sct programmer.

My engine is stock 300K miles :) we did the heads, new timing chain, injectors, cam position sensor, wires, coil, etc... I am considering rebuilding the bottom end but..my friends says to wait. My compression is very good.

What would my gains be if I did the underdrive pulley and what effect does that have on the driven components ? I like the idea of a tune. I was going to replace the cam with one with a little BUMP. :)

i wouldnt tune tune your truck with a transthat has 300k on it

I don't have a lead foot and I'm not skeered of the transmission. I have a friend that knows how to rebuild them. I've wanted to work on an auto trans. for 30 years. LOL

I'll 2nd that about not using a tuner with a manual trans. My 2000 is a 5sp, I was dissapointed with the tuner, The under drive pullies were the biggest improvement, hands down. You can buy a lot of gas for what you'll pay for the tuner

Ive been looking for some Under Drive Pullies, But I cant find any. I did not know you could get a tuner and some one to email you the tuning spec and programs, that is awesome. I have been looking into SCT for a while but was not aware of the email deal.

You usually buy the programmer from a tuner such as Rogue Performance with three specialized tunes. You can then later buy additional tunes and upload them from the computer to the programmer. If you really want your shift points changed you have to be very specific so the tuner gives you what you want. Personally I am very picky about this stuff so I purchased the Pro Racer SCT package which allows me to write my own tunes. You have to have an idea of what you are doing though.

I just purchased a programmer from Mark Malone in Canada. The guys on the VW TDI forum like his work. He sends you the programmer, you down load the software to your home computer. You then connect the programmer to your vehicle and upload the factory program on the drive. You save it in a file on your computer then email that program to tuner. He designes a program and sends it to you VIA emial which you download and install on the vehicle. Vroom..Vroom. :)
