you know i never thought about that with the engine tech... if you have a few bucks and need an engine anyway, you may as well drop in a 302. there are many companies that offer COMPLETE swap kits that are pretty much bolt in. IMO thats the way to go if money is not an issue. if the truck is your daily and you dont have a ton of money, you can just rebuild the engine you have and do a few tweaks. a good machine shop can work the heads a little to get some more power, a slight overbore, etc.

I agree. The 302 swap has been done so much on your truck it's like a no-brainer anymore. Go to http://www.therangerstation.com and you'll find LOTS of stuff on v8 swaps (links, tech articles, etc.)

L&L used to make a 429/460 swap for rangers. That would probably be the biggest you could put in. In all honesty.. its overkill.
A good Used/rebuilt 302 would swap in. Several companies make complete kits for around a grand that have ...
Motor mounts..
long tube hedders...
radiator...
oil filter relocator...
steering linkage adjusters...
.. And all the other little nessecities to facilitate the swap.
I had SEVERAL different v8's in my 84 ranger and it was an EASY swap ( all were carb'ed tho ) . New Yorks CARB cutoff date is July , 1987. I don't know what Jerseys emissions laws are. Considering the year of your vehical, I can't fathom any emissions issues.

As for the money issue. for now money is an issue so I sounds like a rebuild to get her running fresh again. This truck is NOT a daily driver it is a BEATER.
