Get pure fuel when ya' can
You don't really need the 92 octane. Use the lowest octane you can without the engine pinging, avoid the gasahol when you can, having fewer BTU's of energy per gallon than pure gasoline it will hurt your fuel economy and has the very real potential of causing damage to the fuel system and engine over the long run.

It will be better for the engine overall as higher octane burns much better thus leaving less carbon build up. Also, higher octane doesn't allow knocking as lower octane can thus more fuel is consumed to illuminate knocking. However, you won't notice a difference unless the engine is made to run on higher octane. My BMW was designed to run on higher octane, I put 87 in it once...never again.

Its all about compression ratio. Your motorcycle likely has a compression ratio well over 10:1. You Ranger is 9.3:1 I believe. The higher compression ratio means the fuel will ignite before it is supposed to, so you need a fuel that is more resistant to ignition.
Diesel engine have a very high compression ratio of like 14:1 and the fuel is like 60 something octane. All that means that diesels can run without spark plugs. So by going up a octane level in gasoline engines all you are doing is trying to prevent is from "dieseling".

I'm glad I found something useful in my manual when I was bored the other day that wasn't useless information. The manual actually says not to use higher octane fuel because it can make engine knocks and pings more noticeable...I kid you not. I wouldn't be the type to buy into this theory without seeing it first-hand, but the first few tanks after I bought my truck were premium fuel and it started running much smoother after I switched to regular unleaded.

ive been running 91 octane the last 5 or 6 tanks and the pinging is pretty much gone... Ill try switching back to the regular 87 octane for a few tanks and see what happens. And change that dam timing chain when I get the time.
I also read somewhere that a guy took his truck in (to the stealership) for an oil change and they did a PCM update... free of charge. They were talking about how this is usually the case when you take your car to a dealership for service its just something the dealer does. He had already replaced just about everything to try and fix the pinging, without fixing it, and after the PCM update the pinging was gone... Im going to take mine in to the dealer to have the speedometer reset after i get my 32's so I might as well ask about a PCM update while im there... what do you guys think?
