04 Motor Swap 4L SOHC
I bought a 2004 ext cab, power everything, black 04 Ranger. Bone stock for $500. No rot but with 160K. The guy I bought it from said last time he drove it there was less then a quart of oil. Its has a noise like a bent rod or something. My question is that could I take a motor from an 01-03 Ranger 4L SOHC and do a direct swap or do I have to buy a 2004 4L SOHC. Any advice with harness or anything would help thanks. I'll post pics once I start.

But to answer your question, you can use a 01-03 4.0 SOHC if you're just using the long block and not any of the electronics. You need to keep all the wiring from the 04 and put it onto the older engine.
I really wouldn't use a 2001 or a 2002 4.0 because of the timing chain tensioner issue.

Truck isnt all beaten up, he wanted $1400 but I talked him down to $500 cause of the motor problem. I wont swap a 5.0L in it cause of time and money, my plan is to flip the truck before winter. So I have to use a 4.0L out of a 04 or can I use a 4.0L out of other years. I know of the tensioner issue in the 01s but it seems the 02s had it fixed. I know I have to keep all the electronics off the old engine but all I want to know is if I use a diffrent year engine will it work. Such as the harness plug ins.

Finished the swap. I bought a used 02 expo motor with 90K miles for $200. I noticed the diffrence was that the fuel rail, injectors, upper intake and egr. The old motor I took apart and the timming chain tensenior was broken on the right head. Anybody tear a SOHC apart?
How was the Swap? In 4 weeks that was quick.

It went fairly easy would have been closer to 2 weeks but the cold/frost and snow up here screwed everything up. The hardest was finding a motor, not alot of people have changed a SOHC yet so I went in with no help. I broke one trans bolt and changed all the gaskets on this new motor, thermostat, waterpump and changed the knock sensor since its under the plastic intake. There are atleast three diffrent style intakes for the 4L SOHC.

I have a 2000 Explorer 4.0L SOHC I am considering putting in a 2000 Ranger (current engine 3.0L 296K miles) . The 4.0 is high mileage 243K. I'm gonna do a compression check on the engine, then I'm gonna do some serious marking of wires and picture taking as I remove everything and take parts off the vehicle. Now after that. I am gonna replace the timing chains and all that stuff in there. Depending on compression, I may go further. Initially, I was gonna just rebuild the engine completely. :)
We'll see. I might do a lil port matching, give the exhaust a lil breathing room....maybe. This is basically my Yard truck but I want to be able to just hop in and go where I want. Sorta...."Drive that ole Chrysler to Mexico boy !! Uhhh...Keep your hands on the wheel there !! Now ya got it !! ZZ TOP !!
LOL
How much of a pain are the perpherials going to be ?? I thinking I gotta change it all but I have everything. I'm gonna refresh the transmission as well.
Touchdowns everyone. :D
