3.0L to 4.0L engine swap

The 3.0L Vulcan in my 2003 Mazda B3000 is toast. 90,000km (56,000mi) on that engine. It was well taken care of, ran smooth and didn't burn a drop of oil. A broken valve spring started a chain reaction dropping the valve into the cylinder, resulting in extensive damage. Long story short the engine will need to be replaced.

Will the 4.0L SOHC engine bolt onto the existing engine mounts and will it link up to the transmission without modification. Also wiring harness, computer and any other unforeseen difficulties. The shop is going to charge 17 hours labour and I would like to know if it would be any extra work at all to replace it with a 4.0 or should that idea be forgotten about?

Also the head mechanic at the shop insisted that the V6's are Mazda built, for Ford. The use of the word "Vulcan" just put a funny look on his face. I was pretty damn sure that 3.0L is a Ford engine, as well as the 4.0L It even has "Ford" stamped all over it. Is that not a variant of the 3.0L that powered the Taurus and other Fords over the years? Otherwise the guy seemed to know what he was talking about.

The shop wants to charge $1100 for a wrecking yard engine with 75,000km (46,600mi) + 17h labour comes out to damn near $3000. Anyone have an idea what a rebuilt or a brand new engine should cost? Those figures are in CAD if no one had guessed .

Thanks,

Damn, that sucks. Knock on wood but my 3.0 has over 234,xxx km's on it, and I've only replaced the plugs, wires, and coil pack.

It's amazing what a little piece of metal can do in there if it gets loose.

I'm not too sure what a crate 4.0 would run you, but look around on the site for info pertaining to the swap. I'm pretty sure there's a few other items that need to be swapped out...like the computer and such.

Good luck on the project. I swapped a blown motor from my 87 Dodge Shadow, during reading week, years back. From blow up to completion, under 7 days. Just me and a Haynes manual.......engine hoists are your friend, I was lucky enough to have access to one.
