Icon5 1995 Camshaft Position Sensor Help?

I am working on my 1995 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4, V6 4.0 OHV. I am trying to determine if the only the sensor can be replaced on top of the Camshaft Synchronzier assembly. When I search for the Camshaft position sensor online or at a parts store I come up with a black cap replacement with the wire harness that plugs in horizontal. The synchronizer on my truck has a metal plate on top with a small alignment window and a vertical wire harness plug. I can not find a replacement part that looks like the one on my truck, unless I purchase the entire synchronizer. Even the parts pro's are confused about this because the sensor replacement doesn't match the synchronizer replacement when searching this truck. Any help would be appreciated. Code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Did you get a code for the sensor? CEL on? It is most likely that the sensor is faulty due to the synchronizer being worn out. When the bushing in the synchro wears out it begins to crash into the sensor. Sometimes the synchro will chirp or squeal if it gets bad. You should probably just get the whole deal. If the synchro fails all together, it could cost you a lot more. rockauto.com is your friend. BTW, I think there are 2 style plugs on the sensors... 1 is straight, the other has a step in it. Just look at your plug and you will see which type you need. If you have a step plug, the good news is that it will plug into the straight sensor, just not visa-versa.

Yes, Check Engine light has been on for almost a year reading P0340 "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction". No chirping or squeaking, the engine actually runs very well. However, it will stall occasionally on a quick acceleration. Not sure if that is related to this issue or not. I was really hoping to only replace the cap sensor, since replacing the entire synchronizer requires removal of the intake and fuel injector assembly on the 4.0 engine. I am attaching pictures of synchronizer that is on my truck and the replacement sensor from Rock Auto. They don't look compatible to me.

Doesn't look compatible to me either. The lower one is probably a new improved design. I'm not familiar with the cam synch for the 4.0 though. Does the sensor sit under the metal plate with screws, or is the metal plate the actual sensor? If the metal plate is just a cover, then the above sensor may set in. One difference I see is the angle in which the male plug engages the sensor socket. Have you taken your sensor off to inspect the inside? It's a pretty simple made sensor. Not a lot there to fail unless there is actual structure damage or corrosion. To properly inspect the cam synch, you must remove it. The bushings wear out, allowing the shaft to wobble or go up and down. The gear teeth on bottom can get really worn thin to the point they start chipping or shear off.

I’m not familiar with the Splash, but here is a picture of mine in my 95 Ranger 4.0. I had to remove the upper and lower intakes and both value covers to get to it.

On this model they don’t sell just a replacement sensor, so I had to replace the entire synchronizer assembly.
