1999 4.0 4X4 oil pressure

The truck has 58,000 original miles.
This week, on original start up the oil pressure gauge flickers up and down then locks down as if not working at all. 5 minutes later all shows normal.
Electrical? Oil pump going? Wrong grade oil? Where should I start?
Oil was just done but it seems the least expensive to try first. Any suggestion is appreciated

Gauge is fake, it is a switch that turns on around 5-7 psi. Ever notice how it never moves as the engine revs? A real gauge will show pressure build as rpms do.

If your engine is not tapping and sounds fine you have pressure and a sticky switch. If it sounds like a bunch of little hammers beating metal then you really have no pressure.

Perfect description. Yea I can rev it, it will come up for a half second then back to nada. Stop for a few minutes and restart it...it works fine.
Yet again Ford used crap and an easy way out to save money in production.
I still wont buy anything else so shame on me.

Check the wire on the oil pressure sending unit. It sounds like the wire is broken on the engine end of the wire. It could be broken anywhere along it, but the engine with all its movement is the most likely place. Just tug on the wire, fairly hard, and see if it comes apart. Repair it when it does. Good luck.
