2002 4x4 4.0 with no balance shaft?

I pulled the motor on the 02 i just got due to "engine noise" and while the pan was off i noticed that there was no balance shaft. From everything I've seen about these, every 4x4 has a balance shaft. So i got the new (to me) motor in the mail, started doing the chains and guides and noticed there was also, no balance shaft. Someone tell me Im not crazy.

I just received my new 4.0 from Ford today. Gave them my vin number and looked at the engine today. I looked at the paper slip on top of the engine and it said 01 SOHC Expl. w/o balance shaft. I know Ford sent me the right engine, so your guess is as good as mine. Many people have thrown non balance shaft 4.0s in 4x4 trucks will no bad effects.

Ranger engines did not use balance shafts at all to my knowledge. I think only explorers from 2002+ 4x4 did.
