302 swap

Go to the section dedicated to V8 Rangers. There is plenty of useful information. As for cost, that's all going to depend on your resourcefulness in locating a donor vehicle.
I've seen entire V8 Explorers and Mountaineers on craigslist fairly regularly in my area for a grand or less. Getting the entire donor vehicle is the way to go. I'd plan on at least a grand over whatever you can find the donor vehicle for to complete the swap retaining the 5 speed and 4WD, if you're doing the work yourself.

Yep, donor vehicle is the way to go. Then your budget will depend on if you want to make any modifications to the motor and drivetrain (engine mods, different gear ratios, etc.). If you don't have an 8.8 rear end, then you need to buy things to swap that over to your Ranger.
What's going to hurt your budget is all of the small things you'll probably want to replace out of such an old vehicle before you swap over (thermostat, water pump, bolts, etc.). Decide how much you want to spend and double it. Or you can do what I wound up doing and eventually throw the word "budget" out the window lol

Yes, ^^^
Donor Explorer/Mountaineer V8 is probably the simplest way to go, BUT..............
'96/'97 models don't have PATS system, which is good, one less failure point.
But these also have the 40psi fuel system with return line
'99 and up have 65psi system, like your 2002, and no return line.
So if you get a donor vehicle, '99 and up, make sure you get a working PATS key with it.
You can transfer PATS module(above glove box) with V8 computer to your Ranger, and switch ignition lock cylinder.
The PATS module and Computer are a "matched set", they can't be used separately, only a Ford Dealer can "re-match" a Pats module with a Computer.
Most locksmiths can add PATS keys to Module/Computer but system must be installed and able to power up to do this.
You need to use E-fans because of longer engine.
And a remote oil filter housing usually.
