2WD Engine in a 4x4?

I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4 extended cab that needs a new 4.0 engine, and would like to know whether a 4.0 from a 2000 2WD will work.

I have heard that they will and others say they won't, and I've been told that as long as the 8th space in my VIN is an X it will work.

Does anyone know? Thanks.

The engine doesn't know if the truck is 4WD or 2WD. It just provides power to the transmission. I am not aware of any difference in the 4.0 OHV, be it 4WD or 2WD. I have heard that the 4.0 SOHC can have a balance shaft difference between the 4WD and 2WD but I don't know that is true. It would still work with either.

Yes, +1 ^^^

Oil pans are different, for axle clearance, I think

balance shaft was added with Live axle, front driveshaft always turned with front wheels, in 2001, and that is when the 4.0l OHV was dropped and the 4.0l SOHC was added so it had balance shaft on 4WD models but people have swapped 2WD 4.0l SOHC into 4WD and said they didn't notice any vibration or difference.

Always install new rear main seal on crank shaft when an engine is out, always, $8 part

Thanks guys. My truck and the new engine are a 2000 so the balance shaft isn't an issue.
I also have the parts if I have to change anything like the oil pan.
Thanks for the info about the main seal.
