Two Temperature Sending Units?

OK. I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but if so I can't find it. Anyway, I have a 2005 Edge with the 4.0L SOHC motor.

I just had to replace the Thermostat housing (another topic at least) and there are two temperature sending units, which I replaced. Here is the issue:

The two units I took out looked identical. Same shape, same plug, same color. The Ford parts guys gave me two different units. One looked just like the sendors I took out and the other had a larger tip and a different color plug.

Does anyone know which goes where? I put it back together (no leaks now) and the motor is running fine, but the temperature gauge pegged to hot on startup and now is part way up when up when the engine starts, but goes all the way to hot after running a minute or so. Reseting the PCM only results in the straight to hot etc.

My understanding is that one unit sends info to the PCM for control of the air/fuel mixture determination and the other sends info to the gauge.

It seems that the unit sending to the PCM is working since the motor is running great, but the gauge sender is not or is wrong.

Can someone please enlighten me (and others I am sure) on this subject?

BTW - if you remove these guys you need to replace them with new. It is very likely that the old ones will leak if put back in. The "O" ring won't reseal in most cases and don't loose those clips (also pay attention to how you took them out).

Also, I looked up the part numbers for both senders and according to that info, they both should work. Confused? Me too.

This may help!

OK. so I was looking around another Ranger forum and found the following information, which as it happens applies to my truck and maybe yours if you would like to know.

The two temperature sending units two cables are color coded as follows:

ECT PCM sending unit: light green/red and gray/red
ECT Gauge sending unit: red/white and black/white

As it happens, this perfectly matches the coding on my truck and guess what, the sending unit on left (as you are facing the engine) is the Gauge sending unit and that is the one that I put that oddball sender in that the Ford guys sold me. The PCM unit on the right is working fine since my engine is running great.

The is the likely setup in all SOHC engines I would expect. Fortunately, that sender is very easy to get at so it is going to get changed tonight!

I'll post again if that does the trick or not.

I had the same problem when I did my 04. The first housing they gave me was the wrong housing. only had the spot for one sensor.

Then got the sensors went to put them in and same problem as you. I ended up using a new rubber ring gasket on the one old sensor and returned the new one that didnt fit. It kinda pissed me off. But I had to get my truck back again.

Those clips are a pain though. dont loose them

Icon7 That did the trick!

Got home last night and after a cool down period, I managed to change out the gauge sender without incident. If you do this, be very careful of the clip, which holds the sender in place. If you loose it you will have to go to the dealer for a new one.

Anyway, I removed the left sender, which was not working and after looking at it the differences between it and the old sender were apparent. The tip is larger, but more important the connector is not the same. The top(?) guide is off center whereas the original is right down the center of the connector.

I am not happy that the dealer sold me the wrong unit. Perhaps if the parts guys had looked it up by VIN (which I had with and offered, but no they didn't want it) I would have received the correct part.

Bottom line is the sender now works and everything is leak free and happy. Especially me.

Note the color coding on the wires in my previous post. It will save you grief if you tackle this task.
