First Dyno sheet of 4.0 underdrive pulley

This may be the first viewable dyno of the new underdrive pulley in development for the 4.0 ohc Ranger and '05 Mustang. It's kind of exciting for me to bring it to you. The pulley will sell for just under $300. The reason is it needs to have a harmonic balancer built into it which severely adds to the price. Looking at the prospective of 12 HP and 16 TQ to the wheels and the price is very competitive for the results.

The dyno is from an '05 Mustang, the same or similar results should apply for Rangers. You can view it here:

bad! It would make your supercharger spin slower, therefore robbing power and torque.

ummm...I dunno about 300 bux for an underdrive setup. I paid less than that for my nitrous setup. And it was easier to install lol

all nitrous should be used for is to spool up a big turbo to get boost fast. otherwise you dont need it...

i wanna say, not positive but, an underdrive pully changes out the main drive pully makeing it smaller and in turn making it easier for the the engine to turn the a/c, steering, and the otherthings on the belt. but in turn it makes the a/c, alternator and steering pump turn slower.(i think) but maybe someone else will chime in.

no negative effects, the new product lets the engine do its job just a lit bit easier and it frees up that hp and torque rather than adding on to it, thats how it was explained to me

there are some negative effects with an underdrive pulley if you drive with a light foot and run auxilary components like subs or offroad lights. The alternator pulley turns slower like Zach said and if you dont accellerate often enough to crank the alternator fast enough your auxilary components will loose power/performance. Some people who run underdrive pulleys report that when they come to a stop their headlights or other electronic lights dim momentarily. So if you run 500+ watt subs the sq of your system will probably go down when your truck is idling.

The pulley will give you more power and torque though because it creates less drag on the engine...smaller pulley = less inertia and therefore allows faster angular acceleration of the pulley which = more power.

So are there after market alternators that would compensate for the loss of power?

so buy an underdrive pulley and an optima yellow top battery and you will be good to go

save your money on the alternator and spend it on a battery^ thats gonna outlive your oem batt by by about twice the life.

I have an underdrive set on my focus, the set included crank pulley, water pump pulley, and alt pulley, the only negitive effects i saw on my focus which may or may not be seen on any other car was: When my battery was on its last leg(5 years old) the head light and dash lights would flicker at idle, my A/C system might need a check up but currently at idle regular A/C does not do anything when its 100 degrees out like it has been, I need to put it on A/C max to stay cool but only at idle.

Benifits on the other hand was WOW, Now this was on my focus but simular effects should be seen on any car. off the line performance was greatly improved, GAS MILEAGE IMPROVED like 10%.

I realize it has a harm balencer and all but I am not jumping on this for $300, I don't it really needs the balencer, another $100 and I could get a bama tuner and get about the same benifits.

So $300 for the UD pully and another $150 for a yellow top. and you get 12 hp and 16 fpt. I wonder what that would put the total rear wheel horse power to when added to a intake, bama tuner, and exhaust.

those numbers on the chart have to be power at the wheels, we have 207hp at the crank.

I stated OHC (SOHC), not OHV. I am unsure if they interchange, I need to look up the Ford part number for both stock pulleys to see if they are the same model number. It might work for both applications, it might not. If it doesn't, don't hope for one for the ohv engine. The '05 Mustang is the only reason these are going into production.

Let me hit on some of the questions, although it looks like most have been answered.

With a Supercharger- It is usually impractical with a supercharger as already stated because it slows the supercharger pulley down so you would get less boost. It might be done by using a smaller supercharger pulley to get that component spinning faster.

Nitrous vs pulley- nitrous is a good bang for the buck for straightline acceleration. I have installed about 4 kits so far. I have used it in the past and will use it in the future. It is pretty much useless when offroading or pulling a trailer though. So while the pulley may not be for you, the application is viable for many many others.

Pulley with alternator- I would not lose any sleep over this issue. If there is a problem, it won't leave you stranded on the side of the roads. It will be something like some dimming of the headlights at night while at idle. If there is a problem and it needs to be dealt with for sheer frustration reasons, there are remedies. High Amp Alts were recommended, but I should be able to come up with a smaller alternator pulley to make the alt spin at the normal level as before. This is often asked, but out of the dozens of 3.0 ranger pullies I have sold, no one has come back to ask for the alt pulley.

Pulley vs bama chip- no sweat on that. They are both good products. People are always looking for more, so hopefully you'll put me in line somewhere on the mod list.

Power at the wheels- yes the dyno is to the wheels.

How does it work/what are the negatives- the only negative can be (not will be) the alternator issue and you need to budget a few more $$ to change your belt as it need to be shorter. The benefits were covered pretty good as many people have posted up their experience on other vehicles. It will take some time to write something up that makes sense. It can be a confusing subject.
