4.0 No Muffler?

I was just curious how the 4.0 sounded with no muffler? Like cut it off right before the muffler. I like a loud truck but I dunno if it sounds like chit...

it will defintly be loud but i thought it sounded like **** but i didnt have a tail pipe just right before the muffler for a day till i found a new muffler

cory07ranger4x4 09-12-2007 08:59 PM

I did search and all those guys don't have a 4.0 and if they do then they were talking about what muffler they put on there.

whippersnapper02 09-12-2007 09:10 PM

I had my muffler unbolted and it sounded great. The only thing is that where it unbolts is right under the cab so its loud as hell inside. I couldn't hear my music or talk on the phone while on the freeway because of it. I bolted it back on because I'd rather have my truck sound like your blowing through a straw than to not be able to hear my music.

LordofWar has a 4.0 and has a link in that thread to his straight piped 4.0. It's the #9 post.

camodown said his truck was really loud, he has the SOHC, if you put a turn down pipe on it, its really not that bad, a 3.0 with a flow master sounds about the same..

cory07ranger4x4 09-12-2007 09:55 PM

thanks a lot guys... any more people tried this? any more video? Is that guy in the #9 post mufflerless? I am not sure if he means he cut off right before the muffler or what. get what I mean or no?

No muffler on mine and i love it . It's alittle loud but with the radio up i can bearly tell. When i let off the gas it has a deep rumble that sounds cool sounds sorta like a V8

99ranger4x4 09-14-2007 03:06 PM

my MTZs at 70-75.. cruising on the highway with the windows shut, are louder then my exhaust. so its not really that bad..

idk why, but the exhaust and tires are louder with them up, guess its the absence of the wind? haha

got a friend with a 4.0 4x4 between a 98 and 2000 model and its has no muffler but has dual to tips and it sounds good...not really loud til about 4500rpm but sounds good even at idle

dngerzone 09-27-2007 10:20 AM

:sgrin: i just was trying new things and cut my exhaust canister off like one inch before... on the piping from the cats... and i love the way it sounds...i might play around with putting a tip on there... but i will try and get a video link A.S.A.P. but ... if you want to be safe jsut take it to an exhaust shop say hey can you cut this here and if you dont like it ask them to weld it back on... but trust me you wont need them to... :sgrin:

i thought it sounded kind of like crap without it, but thats just me. so i put a magnaflow on it. kind of dissapointed about that to.

camodown 10-01-2007 01:03 PM

If you just unbolt it it is obnoxiously loud and if you go over 3K rpm then you sound like a ricer like no other. Maybe if you put more pipe so it is not under the cab or a turn down it might help.

Whenever I think I want a loud exhaust I just unbolt it and drive around. It is fun for about 5 minutes then I'm over it.

johnson21 10-02-2007 12:34 AM

i thought it sounded like a ricer to, i had it off for about 15 min then had to do somethin about it.

04lvlII 10-02-2007 09:06 AM

my buddy cut his off and the last cat i think it sounds like crap way to loud i have a glass pack on mine i think it sounds alright

dngerzone 10-02-2007 10:24 AM

yeah but heres the thing you guys cant cut the last cat ... tht is how come it sounds like crap.... where the muffler sits go inch towards the cab on the pipe that connects the cats to the muffler... and cut it there... that means that you should have about 24 inchs.. two feet give or take a couple inches ...( this is from memory..) of exhaust pipe left.. then it will sound better... not like flowmaster 40s but it will be at a level that you can hear.. and if all else fails just put on a cherry bomb...
