4.0L ohv to 4.0L sohc

Alright I have been planning this for a little while now lol and now finally it has come to be. I had a 98 ohv with 167,000 on it, it lived up to its reputation as expected. It ran great, and had great down low torque and all it needed was a lifters and a rear main seal. The lifters tapped and it leaked a decent amount of oil, didnt burn any oil and got decent gas mileage.

I had followed this motor in a junkyard in North Dokota to see if anyone bought it for a year and a half and I got lucky because no-one did. So I saved up enough money to buy it and I bought a 03 4.0L sohc along with the transmission and t-case along with a front and rear drive shafts (all with 1700 miles). We as in my dad and I, got all the engine wiring and computer along with the key because of the pats system. Also we put in a new steering rack as it was making some noise. We have already started to do the motor swap and have gotten to the point of wiring it in. When we put the motor in we kept it bolted to the transmission and put it in as a whole unit. I have taken a couple of pictures of this to post up for you guys because I know you guys love pictures of things. :)

This is when the motor was out and there was just simply nothing in there. lol

That is the new steering rack that we put in.

And ofcourse we gotta have a picture of the faithful engine hoist.

HAHA...I've got the same hoist except it's orange. lol.

Did you grab the PCM from that truck? I don't think that OHV Y-pipe will work with a SOHC. I'd look at eliminating PATS.

I just want more hp and I dont have the time or the money to have my ohv built, so just put in a motor and gain 50hp and 10ftlbs plus the little aftermarket things im gonna do to it also. Plus all of this stuff is brand new.

Just remember - SOHC is nice - but they bog down in the low RPM's.. I dont mind myself, since I absolutely love popping it up to 4k+ all the time getting up to speed on the roads.. but I've heard good things about OHV's concerning the low end power

youre right about the ohv having better low end, but i would NEVER trade my SOHC for the OHV ever! ive had both and the SOHC is so much more powerful. this is a cool swap i think

What year is the engine? Depending on the year I would fix the timing chain tensioner issue before putting it into the truck.

It's got 1700 miles... lol. My '06 had 1,000 when I dropped it in.

Anyway...his engine appears to be an '03 because of the lack of an EGR system.

Yeah I know of that problem and the motor is already in and I dont really plan on pulling it out again, but anyway I bolted up the t-case and I tried to bolt up the old rear driveshaft to the new t-case and on the bolt up for the driveshaft to connect to it the t-case are spread out farther than on the old t-case. Does anyone know why ford did this lol? The entire drivetrain is pretty much the same on all rangers, why this small and subtle change on the t-case? It doesnt make any sense!!

The bolt holes on the yoke(i think its called) to the t-case are spread farther out then on the older one.

And as you can see the new 03 front driveshaft bolts right in with no worries.

3k seems really high. Couldn't you of done a v8 swap for that? I'd think you could of bought a junked out v8 exploder for $500-1000, freshened everything up and had it in your truck for another $2k.

yeah the old motor was great the lifters tapped and it needed a rear main seal but other than that burned no oil and had no other problems
