91 Ranger Coil pack smoking after alternator replacement
Hi all, I've got a 1991 Ranger 4.0 OHV. It ran and drove fine, but the alternator was over-charging the battery so I went ahead and replaced it.
The replacement alternator came with a plug for the voltage regulator, but the other 3 wires going into it had to be crimped on because it didn't come with a plug. So I did that, the 1 small white wire and the 2 big black wires. Now the problem is, after replacing that, it will start up fine but it runs really rough and then dies after a few seconds. After messing with it for a bit, I went to start it again and the coil pack started smoking and then actually caught fire! So obviously something is messed up. I'm wondering if I hooked the 2 black wires up backwards possibly, or if a short showed up somewhere. So, my question is, does anyone have the engine wiring diagrams or any other advice? |
