Valve cover gaskets

My valve cover gaskets are leaking in a bad sort of way. The process described in my Chilton involves removing the intake manifold itself. Has anyone done this themselves? Is it to hard for a amateur to do? Or should I just spend the $ and have somebody do it? Thanks guys.

What engine.
Most times, the intake does have to come off to do the passenger side, but sometimes you can get away with not taking it off and sneaking the valve cover out by un-bolting the A/C compressor and moving it forward.
