i'm no expert in ranger history, but has ford ever manufactured a 4.0 ranger that wasn't an automatic?

there are more automatics than manual transmissions because people are in general lazy....they don't want to shift, or learn how to drive a manual transmission.....

not all 4.0's w/a manual were 4wd, but they are more common...

lets not forget the manual tranny isnt the best either.

i am not "lazy" just more not what i wanted. i used to tow, manual isnt the best for towing.

the M50D-R1 and M50D-R1HD are good transmissions, it is the slave cylinders that are junk.....

i agree, in a Ranger if you plan on towing an automatic transmission is the best......not only does it have a higher towing capacity, but you wont fry a clutch if you don't know how to use it..

It's not just towing: it's not easy to operate 2-way radios, nav systems, and so forth with a manual transmission, lol. That drives my choice.

i agree. its also one more thing to think about wheeling... but the advantage to the manual is you get to pick the gear...

crawlin i wish i had an Auto at times.. no need for 3 feet so some of my starts aren't very graceful but who cares with the manual i can bump it easier, but every other kind of wheelin i'm glad i have a manual, easier to rock, you can judge what the trucks gonna be more likely to do IMO.

granted i've never driven an auto wheelin.

4.0 4x4 5-speed here. the crap thing is none of the rangers at the dealership sell any with manuals. i drove one (08, 4.0 SOHC auto), and it wasnt a bad ride at all...but i still would want a stick shift if i bought one though.

You know what.....SO TRUE! Ican't drive nothing but manual. When I get my '71 Chevy going, I've got to relearn how to drive, since I converted to a TH400 automatic. lol.
