New Guy...Older Truck
Hello forum!
2 months ago i bought a 91 ranger ext cab, 4.0 auto 4wd warn l/o hubs. it is in stock form.
got it cheap, not too bad of shape!
has some a4ld issues im working out, i need to change the body gasket and the vac sol.
it has 170k on the clock and i had to bypass the rad part of the tranny cooler b/c of it being clogged. it has the aux cooler and i have added after it another big cooler in the mean time untill i get a new rad it will have to do.
seems to be ok so far.
did a quick dump a gallon fill , dump and fill twice on the tranny fluid from the return line, shifting has improved greatly! i will change it again and the filter when im in there doing the body gasket....
changed the plugs and wires with m/c copper plugs and bosch 8mm wires..i think i took out the ORIGINAL 3 on the pass side! nice n smooth running now!
i have changed the motor oil twice now...it was in bad shape.. with FL1A and rotella T 15-40...the filters after 1000 miles have been verrrrrryyyyy heavy..im sure its gunk sludge w/e so im comming up on another 1000 miles and im going to do it once more my way and hope that it gets any leftover junk out.....looking down the fill on the valve cover it looks good not sludged up, it does not seem to burn any or smoke hot or cold.
****ok heres what im looking for******
what motor oils are you folks liking for these 4.0s? dino mix full syn? filters?
tranny fluid brand / type...filter brand?
any other tips for anything?
this is the first ranger i have owned and i plan on keeping it! its a fun lil truck to go run around in!
thanks for your time! ~SWP

You know if you think the engine is pretty sludged up and you have extra tranny fluid lying around, drain the oil add 3-4 quarts oil and 1-2 quarts trans fluid to engine and change the filter. run it round 15 minutes to a half hour and the drain it replace the oil and filter again. Should clean it out nicely.

Seriously? No ones gonna say it?
You need to get 5w-20 oil in your truck, thats what the 4.0L calls for, Not 15-40. That heavy of a weight oil will pretty much ensure your top end is starving for lube, especially on the 4.0L which don't have the biggest oil passages.
15-40 is more useful in diesels.

THANKS!
Thanks for the kind welcomes!
I will ask further questions in other places.
Pcollins,
im glad you you told me that. Owning 4 other DIESELS, thats what i had here. It gets a nice warm up b4 ever hitting the road so im sure its not, not getting lube on the top end. i know thats not what belongs in it. It is a tried and true oil that is recomended for just about any app. and i have used it in may other engines (autos/snowblowers/lawnmowers) because of its ability to clean well in a short amount of time with out damage to clogging up things such as bg/seafoam/tranny fluid. (It also lives in my 85 jeep xj 2.5 for the last 100K miles...musnt be that bad.) It is also recomened by many for push rod ohv solid roller lifters/cams because of its add. pack. "This" rangers dipstick does not say any thing except the hash marks and there is no owners manual.
i do kinda think that in 1991 5-20 would have been a PREMIUM oil and not what it called for tho, i might be wrong. im sure they had it filled witha 5-30 or 10-30 from the factory, and i plan on running a 10-30 blend in it when its all over and done with. THANKS!
rangerbrayden,
i have heard of this before, i have also used it on really scummy motors. i dont have any just laying round tho, except for the stuff that came out of the tranny....i dont really think i wana put that in my motor tho...might have junk in it and mess up the cam/etc. THANKS!
