Oil filter removal mess
This is the second time I have changed my own oil on this truck. All goes well until I remove the old filter - my arm gets coated with oil, as well as the cardboard I'm laying on! How do you guys remove that thing without making such a mess? I hate asking about something so basic, but figured that someone has encountered, and solved, this problem. Thanks for any tip/tricks to make this less of an ordeal!

i spin the filter off as fast as i can and then try to get the filter verticle as fast as possible so the oil will just stay in the filter. I then go underneith the truck and manuver it out keeping it verticle as possible.
also my truck as a small little funnel next to the starter, so sometimes i dump it into there and let it drip

I also have the fram "sure drain" I may replace it with a futamoto? valve instead though (faster)
Last 3 times i changed the oil i got a total 1 drop of oil on the driveway..
and 0 on myself. ok a bit on my finger from where i smeared the oil
on the new filter's seal
Edit: the thing about end cap wrenches if you have to get the one that fits
your filter.. there is a jagged one with about 100dents for the motorcraft..
or now that I'm using pure one.. its more like a 20sided hex with flats not jaggies.

damn that 2 liter is a good idea, i might try it this weekend....Everytime i did my oil i got so pissed and it went all over me / garage floor...and frame......I was going to just give up and take it somewhere, but i like doing stuff myself...Im gonna be doing alot to my truck this weekend...

Remote mount oil fiter works well too. Mine is on the passenger-side frame rail, centered under the passenger door. I just put a milk jug with a funnel under the filter, loosen the filter, and all of the oil gets contained in the milk jug.
I put the remote filter on before I heard about the 2 liter bottle trick. If I ever removed the remote filter, I would start using that bottle trick. Hot oil running down your arm and collecting in your armpit is not fun!

I just loosen it part way, let it drain into the pan, then take it the rest of the way off with a towel. USUALLY works without any mess.

I always just spin it till oil starts to leak, then I let it drain out some, then as the drainage slows I turn it a bit more. I use some rags and put them right under the oil filter to try to catch the oil from getting on the engine/componets directly below the oil filter. (Havent done an oil change on a ranger but generally speaking)
Always remember to make sure that the old O-Ring is on the old oil filter too, other wise it will spray the oil out. And also put some oil around the new o-ring and hand tighten it the best you can. This way when you go to change it again the oil should make it easier to undo, also doing it all by hand will keep you from buying a new sending unit cause you stripped the old one.

I hand tighten it as much as possible then do about 1/4 turn with the wrench. My filter
has ptfe treated gasket and i put a little motor oil on it too.
The 2 liter works incredable good as long as you are using it on something that
has a vertically mounted oil filter (ie 4.0) I didnt use any paper towels and no drain pan last time (I have fram sure drain)

1) I don't take the filter off until all the oil has drained out of the pan
2) standing on a small stool, (or whatever I can find handy to stand on.. last time it was 3 bricks stacked up..) I unscrew from the top, QUICKLY, and rotate it so the threads are facing up as quickly as I can.
3) after holding it there for a few seconds to let any drops drip off, I lift out out the top (never take my hand off of it) and drop it down in the drain pan under the truck.
