Oil change in 04 SOHC

Do you all change yoors at 3k miles or another interval. I think I read 5k is reccomended by Ford.

My ford owners manual calls for 5k changes.

I've used them all.. and about 10 years ago I decided to go with mobil 1 full synthetic *and* extend the oil changes. Mostly because I drive pretty easy with at least 50% of my driving on the freeway.

On this ranger however I'm going to give the 5w-30 motorcraft synthetic blend a try. (Just changed it for the first time at 2600miles) Mostly because I'm starting to feel that mobil 1 just isn't worth the $5 a quart for a daily driver. I'll keep a eye on the oil and see how dark it's getting as well as listen to it's noises at startup before I deciding on a regular interval. If it's not too dark and doesn't rattle much.. I'll take it up to 5-6k

If you don't want feel the need to waste money, oil, and time, you can take a step into the 21st century and use 5,000 miles as the MINIMUM amount of time between changes.

I agree completely. the 3k 3month rule came long ago when oils were full of impurities and so on. Now days, if you are doing it at less that 5k, you are wasting your cash and that is for dinosaur oil, not synthetic.

Oil is cheap insurance. 3 months or 3000 miles which ever comes first is good, but I change it more often.

For most people I agree with this.. but you really need to look at the condition of the oil to draw a line in the sand.

I drive easy and at least 50% hwy.. so for me 5k will be the goal. I let the oils condition tell me what it needs to be changed.

WOW!!!

I have a Focus that I use for mostly highway driving, so I'll go 4,500 - 6k, which is about 2 months. My truck, I put a lot fewer miles on, but it's A LOT harder driving, so I do about every 1 - 2k.

What's it worth to ya to save a $20 - $50 a year.

Ford recommends 5k, but they also don't want your truck to run forever or else they couldn't sell you a new one.

The saving is more then $50 a year for 1 - It is closer to $120 -130 + Time. Where as I would figure my labor to be about $30 hr. So add on another $135 and we are talking about $260+ savings... Not to mention the difference in performance and protection... < That isn't what this tread is about.

Everyone is to their own on how often they like to change oil. I personaly, live in the today and beleave heavely on technoligy ( I work for IBM ). AMSOIL has been VERY VERY good to me and other people that have used it. Which is why I keep using it and selling it. OK - I could go on here... But I am stopping.. If you want to talk more about the different kinda of oil and the beni's lets either start up a new thread or use one from the past (which there is plenty of! )

you should probably mention that you work at a dealership, so easy access to everything needed for an oil change is there. otherwise people might think you're really paranoid, lol.

EDIT: i also just PM'ed you.

I don't use synthtic oil, so I'l stick with doing it every 3,000 miles as I have been. My Rangers have all been good to me, despite me not always being easy on them, and I'd hate for any of that to change. One of them I sold @ 136,000 3 years ago, and my boss drives it to this day with no problems...

I used to change my oil every 3k... I have read arguments both for and against oil changing at early intervals and I personally agree with those who say it is a waste. The only time I would change it that often is during engine break in and that's with conventional oil. I have used full synthetic Castrol Syntec since 60k and changed it every 7500-10000 miles. No smoke whatsoever and no problems. I changed to sythetic first off because I hate changing oil so I let it go longer and actually may save a little cash in the long run even though it costs more per oil change.

3000 or 3 months unless that 3 months lands when it is freezing outside, but I will never let a quickie lube touch any of my cars

I have had a bad habit of getting my oil changed, but horror stories of stripped drain plugs and such are stopping that practice for me....I'll do my own. My last Ranger I had the "Oil Tech" tell me to start it up for a minute to fill the filter before topping it off....I did, and heard him screaming to shut it off....I did, and got out of the truck to find half of my hood and the motor covered in oil! He neglected to check that the old O ring came off of the engine with the filter and doubled it up with the new one....It happened to be at a car wash center, so I told him the oil change was going to be free, as was the use of the car wash to degrease my truck. They did take care of me, but what an idiot! Made me mad because I really take care of my trucks like keeping it clean even under the hood.

I change mine 3k - 5k. I don't see why everyone likes to buy that ams oil and go 20k or more. even though the oil dosen't break down there is still alot of crap floating around in your engine that needs flushed out. IMO
