Screamin' Demon coil pack progress....

I am starting this thread to give you 4.0 (and some 3.0 guys who want to know) owners a little info on the Screamin' Demon coil packs....

FYI: I am installing the coil pack on Saturday when i finish up my spring swap, so my 1st fill up with the new coil pack will be then.

I kept my record of my last 4 fill-ups with my truck (keep in mind that this is over a period of about 1.5 months since i dont drive my truck on a regular basis). 99% of the driving was done in the city (since i drive my truck on fire runs i can not say that this is easy driving, but not pedal to the metal driving either)

Stock Coil Pack (most current fill up is listed 1st):
-14.6 mpg city
-14.4 mpg city
-14.9 mpg city
-15.2 mpg city

After Coil Pack:

UPDATE (1-21-07):
Screamin' Demon with stock gap:
-11.75 mpg city


GAPPED THE PLUGS OUT TO 0.065"!!! (1-23-2007)
Truck runs A LOT smoother. Idles 100x better than any configuration before. Revs 100x faster also.....Just for those 2 improvements the $80 was worth it....

**FILLED UP YESTERDAY (2/6/2007)**

Screamin' Demon w/ .065" Gap
- 16.2 mpg (mix city/highway milage)

SEAT OF THE PANTS RESULTS AFTER GAP:
-better acceleration
-better throttle response
-faster pickup

Filled up Saturday 2-10-07 (this was with the Bama and the Screamin' Demon...)
-15.9 mpg (city) with not an easy foot.....

2-20-2007 (again with Bama and Screamin' Demon ALL city driving not being easy with the right foot!)
- 13.8 mpg (city) with not a easy foot

WILL ADD INFORMATION IN HERE AS IT COMES IN! EACH FILL UP I WILL UPDATE THE POST!!

**UPDATE** (3-21-2007)
I filled up last Saturday, March 17, 2007.....i got 15.5 mpg on that tank.....that was strictly city driving also.....


Here is pictures of the Screamin' Demon coil pack. It looks just like our stock coil pack, but you know what they say, "looks can be deciving!"

NEW PICTURE ADDED!!!!! it is an installed picture....

i really like this thing....my truck runs smoother with the plugs at stock gap and it idles smoother also at stock gap....throttle response at the new gap is better......faster pickup also...

OK, did you gap the plugs wider to take advantage of the higher voltage?

the coil pack instructions says:

susposidly the wider the gap, the better the spark....the better the spark, the more and complete fuel burn you have...

OK, didn't know it told you to gap them wider, thats why I asked. I've heard somewhere that there was no difference but they didn't gap the plugs @ 65 instead of the standard gap. I hope it works, would like to get one myself but I'll let you be the guinea pig.

no problem.....yea if you look on www.stuffforyourranger.com it says under the description that you can gap the plugs out to .065" from the standard .052".....that is a big difference....

What is your driving impressions? Can you feel a power increase?


Also for what it's worth.. A wider gap increases resistance within the ignition system. Over time that takes it's toll and degrades parts. I'd suggest going with a plug that has an unshrouded (or more exposed spark) and one that is of a high quality. (I like the denso IT series and the bosch platinum +2) Using a better coil in conjunction with an unshrouded spark / better quality plug, with stock to slightly opened gaps will increase power **and** longevity. An unshrouded spark will gain you a better burn everytime over a wider gap on a regular ole cheap plug.

Rich,

i haven't installed the coil pack yet...it will go in on Saturday...in a Ranger, it has been proven that the stock platinum plugs are 1,000 times better than an aftermarket plug....for some reason the aftermarket plugs dont fire right in the ignition system...

The stock ford plugs are indeed very good! Or I should say at least on the modular engines.

I push 16psi of boost and 100shot of nitrous on my lightning and the ford brand plugs in the proper heat range stand up very well.

The Denso IT20 & IT22 are the best though. They are very expensive at $90 to $100 for eight.. but they are the best we've seen when pushing 600+ hp.

Here is a little unknown tid-bit too.. some of the IHRA dragsters have found the bosch +2 plug a good one to make power.



I'll throw this out there for anybody who's interested. I'll data log a before and after power increase if someone wants to send me thier screaming coil pac. I can do this on a weekend and have the coil sent back to you within a few days. I'l post the hp and tq graphs here on R-F only.

I'd just buy one myself.. but until I see some hard results I'm a bit sceptical. Not only that.. but my lightning right now is sucking me dry.

i bought mine because i belive that anything electrical wears over time.....so since my stock coil pack has 10 years of service under it's belt, i am replacing it......and i keep haveing a bad plug in the #3 cylinder and i think it is the coil pack......

since the stock replacement from the dealer was $180 and $130 from O'Reilly Auto Parts, i got the Screamin' Demon for $90 shipped from Wayne (granitguy)......i wanted to try out the coil and see if it did improve any fuel milage.....

also since no one else has had it installed on a '97 4.0 or any other 4.0 on this board (that we know of) i wanted to try it out and post up #'s for members who are interested..

Yep.. Vette's are the tastiest. Took down 5 Z06's and a 454 69 last time I had it to the track.

BTW, I use NGK Iridium 7 heat range plugs in my L. Work great, but of course I am tuned for them. I use the same ones in the same range in my 12.5:1 Mustang engine.

for what its worth, id throw a new set of plug wires on there as well. i like taylor spiropro 8mm wires. they can handle the increased resistance of the wider plug gap.

Hell, if i get some extra $$ i may get one for teh Ranger when it comes time for a plug/wire change (which i am dreading!)...

the wires i have on there have only 6000 miles on them......the stock wires are 8mm wires......

UPDATE!!!

on the 1st post.....new installed picture and a update on how the truck runs w/ stock gap.....

going to regap them plugs and get a full tank of gas tomorrow....so i will have 1 more of old gap fuel milage to report also!
