Cheap exhaust??

ok, So I had two ideas, one much cheaper than the other, but both pretty cheap... Just wondering if either has been done, or if either would work and sound decent??

CHEAP (sorta): So one idea... remove the exhaust back to the flange a bit in front of the muffler.. and just replace that with straight pipe, custom bent, no fancy stainless kits with mufflers.. just pipe, at ___(?) diameter... done with a flange of course so the stock section is easy to put back on again if needed...

CHEAPER: so... bad idea?? I was thinkin, hey... just cut the muffler, and weld or clamp on a section of pipe?? yes/no?? probably no?
haha, what can I say, I'm cheap.. I don't wanna spend 4-600 bucks on an exhaust kit.. I don't care about dual tips, I don't want chrome.. in fact I just want black.. If either of those ideas would work and I went through with either, I'd just want to get some sort of engine paint and spray the back few couple feet of the exhaust black.. end it at that.

I've been told that this engine with no muffler and with complete tailpipe sounds actually pretty good. I've not heard it in person, but if it's anything like no exhaust after the last cat, which my truck was for a while, it sounds like garbage and performs like garbage! I know alot of that has to do with no tailpipe, but still.

I've tried the highest temp engine paint I could find on my chevy's headers........burnt right off the headers on the first startup.

If it were me, I'd go to a few exhaust shops and get quotes for full custom cat-backs. I had my first done for a grand total of about $200 and that included the Flowmaster. My current system(2.5" head pipe, super44, 2.25" duals dumped before the hitch) ran me a grant total of about $260. It's all about finding the right shop with the right prices and quality. Word of mouth is how I found my exhaust guy.

My exhaust broke 1 week ago and i have not had time to fix it. I just drove over 150 miles today with a open pipe and i got home ready to kill someone. No exhaust on a 3.0=You on the news for murder.
