Cheap Power

I have an old 94 ranger with a 4.0 OHV and it has so many issues its not worth makeing it road worthy again. But i would love to use it off road, except it needs more power. I am looking for a good reliable cheap way to increase my HP without an engine tear down or any major replacments or removing the automatic trans. I did see a JET "Preformance" chip for it up for sale on ebay, would one of these be worth it?

Racing Stripes, the wider the better!
Red is better than Blue\Yellow. 2 Stripes is better than 1.
3 Red Stripes, each 10inches wide, will really max things out!

Welcome to the forum

No, "chips" are not worth it, they do the same thing as racing stripes or muffler bearings

4.0l OHV has 160HP, and that's the limit
Do a tune up and head for them hills

There are no cheap power boosters, never were, that's was made up by someone wanting to sell something, nothing wrong with that, up to people on how they spend their money

Gasoline releases a specific amount of energy when mixed at the proper ratio with air, 14.7:1
If you add more fuel without adding more air you get a flooded engine, not more power
Adding more air so you can add more gasoline is how you get more power
Its why a 5 LITER engine has more power than a 4 LITER engine, because it can pull in more air, so more gasoline can be added and more power released

And its why Turbo or Super chargers work to add more power, they FORCE more air into an engine so more gasoline can be added releasing more power
NOx is basically compressed Oxygen, so same deal, increases available air so more gasoline can be added and more energy released

So if it adds more air to your engine then you can get more power
No car maker "detunes" an engine, they sell performance, so they get the best power they can out of each engine
Emissions devices, since mid-1980's or so, just make the engine more efficient, not have less power
So "working" EGR and Cat converters can't hurt power output

Try higher-octane blinker fluid.

Chrome Valve Covers gave 5 more HP.

Polished alternators gave 2.

Chrome exhaust tips were worth several.

Look on drivers door "Build" label and then go here to see what you have now: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...le_codes.shtml

So do you know of any kits for adding ether a turbo or supercharger? Do you know how the heads hold up to the extra pressure or do they tend to blow out gaskets?

You start putting a super or turbo charger on an old engine.....best keep a bunch of 5 gallon buckets in the bed to use to pick up the parts when the engine grenades.

No matter what Road Kill says.

Drop a Coyote into it, new trans to handle power, new transfer case to handle power, new axles to handle power, new driveshafts to handle power, new upgraded brakes to handle stopping all that power.....and you'll be into it for what, fifty grand?

Morana Racing sells the supercharger adapter plate for the 4.0l OHV: Tom Morana Racing Engines
Make sure you are looking at 4.0l OHV, NOT OHC or SOHC those are different engines

As said, engine will blow up, it was designed for 160horse power, if you exceed that it WILL blow up, when???? is the only question and there is NO answer until it blows up, then you will know that answer for YOUR engine, no one else's, because that's just how it works, lol

You'll have plenty of power to reach the crater filled with used motor oil and coolant....
