Can anyone tell me the difference (if there is any) between the 1999 ford ranger 4.0 and the 1999 ford explorer 4.0. The reason Im asking is because I got a great deal on a supercharger for a 1999 explorer with the 4.0 and I have a 99 ranger 4.0. if I get the supercharger will it work. thank you

your 1999 ranger has a 4.0 OHV
a 1999 explorer has a 4.0 SOHC

And almost nothing for the OHV will fit the SOHC.

1997 was the last year for the OHV in the explorer
2000 was the last year for the OHV in the ranger

Why not buy the supercharger, then save up for a 4.0 SOHC?

You could get the motor for around a 1000 or less I bet and just swap them out. Then you could have a nasty supercharged ranger.

Double check that, it is still an overhead valve motor, but it is SOHC. it has the halo style intake and takes an FL-1A oil filter

Toreador,

Explain to me what you mean by a "halo style intake". I've never heard that before.

Other wise, I don't know what to tell ya all. Looking at the motors side by side, my 2000 and her 99 have exactly the same motor. From the plastic intake, to the power steering pump location, to the routing of the belt, it is all the same. Looking at the actual window sticker from when it was new, the sticker says it is an OHV motor. Also checking the vin, the eighth digit is the letter X. If it was an SOHC, wouldn't it have the letter E (I think that is the right one) in the VIN?

If i can get pics taken in the daylight, (she works 8-5, I work 5-11 at night) other wise it will have to wait for the weekend, I will figure out how to post them. (Might need help with that as Im not sure how to do it.) I will let you see that I am not crazy with regards to what Im telling you.

Checked out a few links on specifications and appears that the 4.0 OHV was standard and the 4.0 SOHC was an option with the 1999 Explorer XL & XLT. Best bet is to rely on the VIN.

The OHV was standard through 2000. The SOHC became an option in 1997, and standard in 2001.

Thanks guys for confirming this for me. I know my eyes are bad, but I really didn't think they were THAT bad.

well even if it doesnt fit, a smart one would pick it up and re sell it... if its such a good deal you could resell it and profit and still make some one a good deal on it... lots of people happy

about the only supercharger on the market back then was a bbk for a 4.0 ohv. I think it fit either vehicle.
