Planning some power mods for my 96 ohv
Alright guys, this winter i wanna pull the motor on the danger and do some mods. 422 comp cam is on the list, as well as some porting and polishing. I also want to paint the motor ford engine blue. So... Here comes the questions... I need to put together a parts list and budget for this little adventure.
I've heard some people say to use aftermarket valves, is this needed? What are the benefits/why?
I keep reading about 988 valve springs. I'm assuming these are the comp cam springs? Can someone post a part number or summit link?
Any suggestions on head gaskets and bolts? Is there anything a tad better than factory but not crazy expensive? Or is factory replacement fine for the power I'll be making?
Pushrods- I can use factory length since it's not a reground cam right?
Reuse stock lifters and rockers/ who makes roller rockers for these motors?
Sohc pan swap?
Anything else? Ur time is much appreciated. Thanks.

WOW where to start.....

You really need to be doing some more reading on your plans. I built up a 4.0L with the 410 compcam over the summer.
1st. If you are placing in a new cam 422 or 410 ... It is HIGHLY advisable to place in NEW lifters.
2.nd. you will need to order custom pushrods for either cam may i suggest smith brothers in oregon. they have the proper size on the shelf for these builds.
3rd. roller rockers are hard to find if any are around they will be complete one off customs.
4th. remember these motors come stock with roller cams and roller lifters.... (keep that in mind)
As refering to head bolts? you are going to be building up a motor that needs dual springs (422) and you want to cheap out on bolts?
as for gaskets... get a COMPLETE kit. felpro makes one that is high quality and is complete from valve seals to oilplug seal.
what heads are you going to be building up? the stock ones? if so do some home work.
I will let you in on some costs... I am in to my build for $2,000. and i still need to take it to a shop for a PCM tune. now one other thing to keep in mind is injectors.... you may run into probs with the 422 cam and injectors that need to be larger.
you will also want to put in a new oil pump, timing chain and sprockets.
and if you think i might be blowing smoke up your ***... here is a link to what i am saying.

Go SOHC I did. You can get alot more top end out of it than you can with the OHV and aftermarket valves tend to last longer then the stock ones as they have bad oil circulation causing a horrible clacky click clack in the heads lol. The OHV also has a low grade rear main seal as well. Go with a later model SOHC with the same work you wanna do to the OHV. Heres my thread on the swap I did. https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...4-0l-sohc.html

Timing crap was fixed in 04 so just get a newer engine. Other than the timing thing its a decent engine. The SOHC still makes plenty of torque. I have never had a problem in any wheeling situation. If you need more torque low provides enough torque.

I find the sohc spins out the tires less since it makes less down low power, since there is less force to turn the wheel it wont be as tempted lol to spin out. And having an open diff. you gotta be really careful with those back tires. And werent the problems fixed in 03 with the timing chains?
