If the fan clutch is only engaging with the A/C on , I would be looking for an over heating problem. The clutch on the fan works by sensing the air temperature coming from the radiator.If the temp rises to a certain point the clutch engages. The A/C compressor puts quite a load on the engine making it work harder/hotter.
If you do a lot of offroading , or drive down dusty roads frequently , I would suggest cleaning your radiator fins from the back side forward with a hard stream from a garden hose.
