no, it is an ignition coil. if you have the 4.0l sohc it has a crankshaft sensor and a camshaft sensor. the crank sensor is located on the timing cover and it gets its signal from the hamonic balancer. That is your distributor persea. You camshaft sensor controls fuel injector timing, it is located in the drivers side valve cover towards the front. Your "rectangle distributor" is the ignition coil. Mounted above the drivers side valve cover toward the firewall. It has a bracket that bolts to the driver side exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. Let me get a picture to better explain the wiring diagram

those numbers are the cyl numbers. Cyl 1 is the cylinder closest to the radiator on the passenger side. Cyl 2 is the one right behind that one(center). then you have cyl 3. go to the driver side. cyl 4 is closest to the radiator. cyl 5 is the next one(center) cyl 6 is the last cyl on the driver side closest to the firewall. match those numbers to the numbers on your ignition coil. the numbers are in order on the coil except for 5 and 6

When I was buying my '06 Ranger, it was the first time I saw this igntion setup. Pretty nice. On my Victory motorcycle the coil is attached to each plug wire. We've come a long way and I'm glad to be along for the ride.
When I was 8,312 feet above sea level in Lake Tahoe, my '03 Victory never hesitated or burped once. I did, looking over the other side of the guardrails. :-O
Sorry a little off topic but EFI is the way to go. Now if I could get one of these young kids to teach how to set it up with a laptop. ;-)
Yes, these new rigs can run a long time without new parts but I think we are better off replacing certain items before the book says. Like plugs and wires.

If it doesn't- most likely the tensioner or idler need replacing.
