Anyone using a heat shield for the intake either homemade or part of a kit?
I have the open cone type and although it's great for taking in alot of air it's to hot, my IAT's are way to high for optimum power,90* while moving at highway speeds, and 130*140* idle and slow moving ,and thats 60*ambient air temp.
So it's just soaking to much hot air from the engine and want to get those numbers down.
Iv had it tuned using SCT X-cal2 with wideband o2 datalogging and I now can do it so im going to try different intake setups and see whats best.

Oh and i got the lean cond't corrected and now have a nice 12.8 A/F ratio.

The heat shields honestly don't do much. You have to understand the fact that Heat rises. And when it Rises under the hood it's hiting metal and expanding out about the surface of your hood. Eventually it's going to get to your filter. The best one i've seen is the Volant Heat shield. The solid box that actually is covered on all sides and if set up right will bring in cold air from outside the engine bay.

 

Yea i agree, eventually it's going to getted sucked in, i was running the closed factory box with a ducted hose to it, but wanted to take some restriction out by using the open cone but i guess that comes at a cost(hot air) so im going to look at the Volant looks to be a larger box setup.
I did see this shield but it just reinforces your statement above it's not sealed so it will get sucked in. Thanks

No that's a really bad design. You have to understand that once metal heats up everything around it does too. If you are on a long drive in a hot place I'd put money that would melt part of your filter.

 

I made an insulated heat shield for a K&N Cone Filter for less than $10
Aluminum insulated with insulating pipe tape from home depot.

i used a flower pot...check my cardomain or search on this site....

it might help heat out...i dunno....i jsut did it to try and keep water and mud outta my filter...
