Difference between OHV and SOHC 4.0
I have no idea what i have in my rig expect that its a 4.0L V6. Its a 98 XLT 4x4. I know SOHC means Single Overhead Cam, but what does OHV mean? Which engine is better? My rig has 142,000 miles on it and it is still running like a champ. My check engine light is on but thats because I need a new MAF. For whatever engine I have, what are some good tips you can give me for my mileage and to get the most life out of it? Thanks guys!!

You have an OHV (Over-Head Valve) .. 160hp vs 207hp for the SOHC
|
OHC is what you have. the SOHC was introduced in '01. Horsepower & torque numbers were dramatically changed. The SOHC makes 207hp/238tq at the flywheel. Ohv mean Overhead Valve. I know bob will post specific specs/differences.....I would, but I gotta go to work.

arent the 3.0s OHV? not to go off topic....
|
Wow, great info guys, so thats why my rig seems a bit slow for a 4.0 V6 and the newer ones seem a bit quicker.
So, with the OHV is there anything that is a common issue or problem (besides the 47 lost horsepower) once they get a little high in mileage? Im at 142,000 and just wondering if I should start to look out for somethings. |

On the SOHCs, isn't there a cam above each cylinder head??....hence the single overhead cam?? I know DOHCs have dual cams above each cyl head.
I havnt actually dug into the internals of our engines.....but if it were a small block chevy, I'm a stud when it comes to tearing into sbcs. |

The OHVs are known for longevity(however your spell it). Known for long life. I guess the 3.0L Vulcon just won't die.....they like an energizer, they keep going and going and going. |
