4.2L V6 Swap "F100 Ranger or Darby Ranger"
Hi guys,
I'm asking for some help with information for a project. I'm looking at buying a house and am going to try to trade my Ranger in for an F250 as part of the deal. Do I think its going to happen (house or truck) - probably not.
So that leaves me with wanting to replace the engine in my 02 XCab. I've been replacing stuff on it and have gotten tired of fixing it. I need/want to do something different: I want to put the 4.2L v6 out of an F150 in my 2002 Ranger.
I blew a head gasket on my Duratec 23NS after replacing the water pump and the vacuum plug on the front of the intake manifold. The synchros in the tranny are worn out and I'm tired of dealing with this motor/tranny.
If you guys will help me with information - I'll put up photos and details as I go along so if you want to do likewise you'll be able to use my template.

95% of my driving is under 3k RPM so why would I use a SOHC?
The 4.2 is newer than the 4.0 - more mechanically efficient.
The 4.2 makes more power than any of the other three.
Why do it? Because anything can be done.
An Xcab ranger is 800 lbs lighter than a single cab F150 and the truck will carry a lot more when I swap the axle to a 31 spline 8.8 from an Explorer or Sport Trac.
With that engine and the power it produces I'll probably have to put a 2" body lift on the truck to clear the motor under the hood and then use F150 sized tires (wider than P-rated ranger tires) to help reduce wheel spin.
Also, haven't made up my mind on what to call it so cast your vote:

TOPIC #1 - I need info on the engine wiring diagrams/schematics so I can figure out if I can re-pin some of the plugs and use the ECU from the 4.2 with the chassis wiring harness.
If this is not possible, then I'll have to take the whole vehicle wiring harness out of an F150 and graft it into my Ranger - make the truck think its an F150. But I need to see all the stuff to figure it out first.
Can you guys get me this information/files please? I'm willing to do the knuckle busting and put in the sweat and elbow grease - just need some people backing me up with information.

Ok. I've gotten copies of the PCM pins with signals and voltages for the 2002 Ranger (2.3L & 3.0) and 2002 F150 (4.2). (One of the fringe benefits of AKO: "My Library" has an automotive section with online manuals from Chilton - nice to know there are a bunch of patriots working at Chilton)
The 2.3L has a 63-pin plug and both the 3.0 and 4.2 have 104-pin plug. So - that means doing a direct rewire for my truck (2.3L) isn't likely. However, this also means that I'll be able to keep driving my truck while doing this because the simple thing to do is go pull a wiring harness off a 3.0 in the junkyard and modify it before attempting to put it in. I will post a comparison of the 3.0 and 4.2 pinouts when I get done making a spreadsheet of it.

Well, here's what I have so far with the spreadsheet.
81 of 104 pins are the same: 77% compatibility. Tells me Ford had a baseline design and added in the other stuff as needed for the models. Can someone PM me and tell me how to put up the spreadsheet so everyone can see it? First part is done - side-by-side comparison. Now working on second part, figuring out what needs to be modified. Will need help with this.

As you can see there are only 2 pins that have overlapping purposes: 58 & 84.
The rest are all port-used-in-one-but-not-the-other situations.
The issue with 58 & 84 is they have similar (but differing) uses.

I intend on mine being a 2wd highway truck that occasionally pulls some stuff. What can you guys tell me about the differences in these two pins?
Who is the moderator? I don't see a listing. I'd like to ask about putting up the spreadsheet, visuals help a lot. I don't see a page on the site that has moderator info.
The rest are all port-used-in-one-but-not-the-other situations.

58 should be an easy one VSS was in reared on ranger so just tap into that for that pin and 84 should be the same but i ran into a similar issue on my 5 speed swap the autos have both a TSS called intermediate shaft sensor on the ranger and OSS but i think they only control speed so as long as it gets a signal i just adjusted the PCM gear ratio and rev. per mile until the speedo was accurate you should be able to do the same.

Sounds to me like you know your way around PCM programming. I might have to ask you a question or few later when I get to that point.
Been getting jerked around at work for the last week. And now I have to get ready for a 3 day FTX. Don't know how much time I'm gonna have in the next few weeks. Project is not dead - just gonna have to slow down for a little while.

Yes rearend my computer autocorrected it sorry about that and it should be on top of the pumpkin or at least mine is it measures ring gear rotation speed. And I've tweaked mine a good bit after the swap since i kept the auto PCM with my 5 speed. Mine is only reading speed input from the OSS on the trans tails haft so as long as you have one good reading it can be tweaked to work and the TSS on the rearend should be used for ABS functions.
