Constant sputtering

I have a 2000 4.0 ohv. A couple of days ago when it started getting cold when I would start my ranger it would sputter (with no power loss) until it warmed up and would quit. Now it sputters the whole time warm or cold. (Again with no power loss) just trying to figure out what could cause this. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum

Temp changes are handled by the ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor, and the IAT(intake air temp) sensor

ECT sensor will be on lower intake just above Thermostat housing, but........................there are two devices there, the ECT sensor and the ECT Sender
The ECT sender connects to dash board temp gauge and has no effect on engine operation
ECT sensor connects to computer so it knows engine temp and can adjust fuel accordingly

ECT sensor will use Green/red and Grey/red wires

IAT sensor should be on the upper intake it uses grey and grey/red wire

IAT sensor is a long shot

ECT sensor is more likely but should set a code if engine is running ruff when warmed up

Those are the only temp related sensors used in engine operation

If its not temp related just a coincidence then you could have got some "bad gas" if this happened in the last tank of gas

In colder weather the computer has to CHOKE the engine more so Richer fuel mix when cold and this can foul spark plugs, and they don't get better just worse
So you may want to pull spark plugs clean and regap them

Have the codes read and write them down

If there are no codes then computer thinks all is well so problem will most likely be a sensor not reporting correctly

Clean MAF sensor and see if that help, or unplug it and see how it drives

If an engine is actually running Lean it will ping/knock on acceleration
If an engine is actually running Rich Cats will get very hot, you will hear pinging noises when you shut off engine, as they cool down from being OVER heated

Smell of gas could be fuel leak, o-ring or ??
