why is my exhaust louder when my truck is cold?

Interestingly enough, it's your ears that are different and not the truck. It's well documented biologically that our hearing is more adept in the cold than it is when warmer.
This was an adaptation that came about in our ancestors due to the increased predator activity in winter -- particularly wolves -- when game is more scarce.
The extra sensitivity of the ears allowed us time to pray for our sorry butts before being eaten.
