Engine cast #
Engine cast #
I have a Ranger engine that was put into a Rat rod. I don’t have the VIN # from the original Ranger so I am trying to verify the exact engine that was put in. I have found #tag on the block but every discussion or website does not explain how to track the #’s back to the exact engine model/year. Could anyone give me some assistance with using a chart to identify the type of engine/yr? The #’s don’t line up with any of the charts I’ve found.
thanks in advance.

How do you know its a Ranger or even a Ford engine?
Tags can be different than Casting numbers
Ford has used the first 2 digits for the year, BUT...............it may be the year the parts was first used not the year of the vehicle, i.e. a 1990(F0) number block might be used in a 1994 Ranger, if the block casting hadn't changed
E = 198
F = 199
So
E9 = 1989
F6 = 1996
2000 just used X or Y, only 1 number for year
1 = 2001
2 = 2002
Tags are different and Ford changed these over the years as well
Usually first set of numbers is the displacement in inches but that change to metric at some point I think
Then a space
The next set or single digit can be the model year or if single digit the Ford Plant it was assembled at, then space and 2 digit year
Then second line and the year and month
A = January
B =Feb
ect

I looked up the exhaust manifolds and they lined up with 93 to 97. The rear end is a S352A 308 88 3E12
S352A = plant code
308 = 3.08 gear ratio, open diff
88 = 8.8 inch ring gear
3E12 = 2003 May 12th, That's when the rear end was made, not what year truck it's from.
