They have also overrated in the past. There was a big stink with Cobras that were coming up short. I think they changed the intake manifolds in them after the fact to correct the situation. It was so bad they cancelled the next years production as they fixed the mess. This resulted in the limited production Cobra R for that next model year so there wasn't a missed year as far as history would show.

I may be off-base, but that's what I heard as far as how the Cobra R came to be.

The problem is you'll never get an engine dyno run to compare what the manufacturer puts out. I'm not gonna pull my engine to find out as most people won't. There is loss in the driveline when you do a chassis dyno as the transmission eats up some of the HP.

A standard rule is you lose "about" 15% from a manual and 20% from an auto. This is not an absolute by any means. I don't know what the standards are either. High performance shops run a header but not a full exhaust when they do an engine dyno. They also tend to run it with an electric water pump with no belts attached. They do this for their own consistency from engine to engine, not to mention the extra time and space involved to run the other components. All these differences will impact the final numbers.

My 2004 4x4 manual dyno'd 180.xx to the wheels. Take 205 Engine HP, less 15% and it comes out to 174.

My 3.0 Automatic came in at 122.xx. The stock 154 HP less 20% would be 123.2

There are just too many variables. With the Cobra example I outlined above, there was so much buzz created about it that someone DID pull the engine to find out.

I think the RX8 may have been another one that didn't get as much HP as originally advertised.

I think the cobras actually had MORE hp, than advertised. I think the 03-04 Cobras were rated at ~390hp, but actually broke the 400+ barrier.

I'm talking about the 1999 Cobras. I would think they made darn sure it was right or under rated after that.

The 96-99 4.6 DOHC was rated at like 305hp, then they bumped it up to like 320hp in 2001 when it returned.. then finally fixed the "low" hp problem with the 03-04 Supercharged 4.6 DOHC
