Throttle Response....?
I recently purchased my 94 ranger and I love it. Only thing I am not entirely happy with is the lag in the throttle response. I did this amazing zip tie fix under the gas pedal that took some slack away and gained a notciable improvement. It seems however, that there is still some delay before the engine decides to kick in after the pedal is depressed. I have to test the voltage to the TPS still, but I was wondering what anyone has done to improve their throttle response?

well your gas pedal directly controls throttle througha wire. It's not like a computer goes "HE PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL, FLOOR IT!". Because you're the "FLOOR IT" part of that. So see if there's any more slack. Try, with your truck off, pressing the pedal in fully and then get a buddy to check the cable on top of the engine. There are chips they sell for the engine that will make your truck shift quicker and engine more powerful. I believe its superchips, maybe bamachips makes one. They can basically change your shift points so your engine gets a lil more rawr.

Its a 5 speed. Ya the air filter has been replaced recently, I did that first kinda hopin' it'd make a difference. I am gonna check that voltage reading off the TPS and go from there. Hopfully it will be reading some ungodly wrong number so I can alter back to stock/normal. Me and a buddy checked the throttle opening when we did the zip tie thing. Peddle has no more slack and the throttle plate is opening to where it should mechanically. The 4.0 just has such a long intake tract that it takes a while for the air to move down the pipes. Hopefully it'll get figured out.

Some guy flow tested both the MAF housing and the throttle body and the MAF outflowed the throttlebody, yet a lot of people hack up their MAF to get a little flow. It was interesting. I ended up doing a throttle body half shaft. If you're looking for something cheap (free), this may be something to do. I did a write up on the mod, you can see it here:

You will get a little more response if you change your stock clutch fan to an electric fan too. I better response when i purchased my BBK throttle body. After that I installed an electric fan and it got even better.
This is all assuming you aren't having a problem with one of the sensors or a dirty *** engine.

I have noticed the truck is a little more sluggish when it gets around a 1/4 tank of gas. It runs stronger when it has more gas in it. I am gonna check the voltage running to the pump to see if that could be a possible symptom. I am looking at having a friend design a special throttle body for my truck so whenever I get that I will post pics, but that could be a while yet.
