whatever man.......that isn't any way turning the headlights on will do anything with the battery cable off......come on now......common sense comes in to play here......

I agree with Rich on this one. The faster the positive and negative equalize, the sooner the KAM voltage in the PCM will drop to zero. Turning on the headlight switch will provide a quicker path than with it off. The fastest is to touch the disconnected battery cables together - this should reduce the reset time to near zero.
How much time is required if you simply remove the negative cable and do nothing else? Ford says that disconnecting the negative cable for 5 minutes is adequate to reset the PCM, erasing KAM (Keep Alive Memory). This is actually a conservative value - the PCM will reset in considerably less than 5 minutes.

Good info Bob! This little "tip" is something I've known (and done) for years. I could'nt technicaly explain why because I'm a dunce when it comes to electronic things. It's just one of those things I always knew to "work".

P1443 - EVAP Control System Canister Purge Valve (Mechanical) Malfunction. Monitors the fuel vapor flow between the engine intake manifold and the EVAP canister. The system failure occurs when a leak or blockage between the intake manifold, the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister is detected by the PCM.

This is from one of the links that I posted for you above. It seems clear to me. You'll need to verify that the 97 part number given for the assembly is the same for your 96.
I did some research on the web and found that the problem could be the Canister Purge Assembly. This assembly connects the intake manifold to the charcoal canister and the assembly is made up of hoses, a valve and a sensor. On my 1997 Ranger, it is located near the front of the engine compartment on the driver’s side (the canister is right behind the driver’s side headlight). Apparently, if there are any cracks in the hoses, or if the valve or the sensor wears out, this will cause the check engine light to come on, and return the P1443 code. After looking around on the web for a couple of days, I was lucky enough to find a few part numbers for the canister purge solenoid/flow sensor assemblies:

The evap system on my truck is different from yours so I don't have anything to look at here. It should be a very easy swap out though - a couple of hoses, electrical plugs, maybe a bolt or two. The Purge Flow Sensor is the part that usually fails but it comes as part of the assembly.
Before ordering the assembly, I would look around for any damaged hoses at the canister or tank first because it is possible to get the same P1443 code from a leak. If you find a leak and fix it, it could save you some bucks.

Tank meaning gas tank? And where is the so called canister located?
Yes, the fuel tank.
The canister is in the front corner of the engine bay on the driver side. For 97-back, I believe it is a black rectangular plastic box and may have a domed cap or two on top.
