Flushing power steering fluid
I'm having a difficult time locating my power steering hose in my 97 Ranger. I tried searching on youtube for a tutorial with no luck. Can anyone simply help me locate this hose?
My fluid is low and I believe there may be a leak and I'm hoping it's at the hose and no where else. |
Hoses run to and from the reservoir where you're checking the level, what can't you find?

After posting I re-read what I had submitted and it sounds really stupid.
For some I thought the actual hose where you flush it was under the vehicle by the end of the steering column. I guess that is incorrect. However, I did find it. I was reading the manual it says to use MERCON Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX. This seems to be discontinued for quite some time. Can you suggest a product to use? |
Glad you found the hoses, they'll be connected to the power steering cooler, drain from there.
You should now use MerconV ATF in the power steering, no need for anything else. |
Having a tough time finding MerconV. All the parts stores have Mobil 1 ATF though. Good alternative?
|
It should say MerconV compatible or something, so yes, it's what i have in my manual trans.

Oreillys and autozone both carry it |
Sorry about that. I thought Mercon V was a brand. They have Castrol Mercon V and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF which says is compatible with Mercon V. Which would be best? I only ask because I know a lot of people like Mobil 1.

V is a specific (current) spec of Mercon.
|
Got it. Thanks guys

Yes, Ford released some info in the mid 2000's about MerconV replacing all regular Mercon requirements, i think the V is just more synthetic.

Can Dex/Merc LV be used in power steering systems?
Also, I read that Ford has OKed LV for transfer cases. Anybody else heard that? |
