Fuel pump!
 

Hi All, I'm a new poster..I have a 2001 4.0 Ranger with 145 K. It will not start, but it turnsover just fine. I turn on the key and do not hear the fuel pump at all. I have put my hear to the tank etc....It failed to start the other day...let it sit for 1 hour..started right up. 2 days later, no start again. Any suggestions on how to eliminate somethings that could be wrong would be great. thx:sad:

Yes I did about 30,000 ago...would a bad filter maybe shut off the pump, like a pressure switch etcc..?

No it shouldnt, the ground could be loose for the connection on the fuel pump or it could be going bad. I have an explorer that did the same thing when the fuel pump was going out. It also struggled to Idle and would die out sometimes when it was not warm and I would have to keep my foot on the gas. I changed the fuel pump which was fairly inexpensive (100 bucks) and that fixed it right up. Its not so hard of a change and if you are fairly knowlegeable about mechanics you can do this 500.00 job for only the cost of the pump, if you do change it go ahead and change the sending unit as well while youve got it open. The only special tool you'll need is a ford fuel line disconnect tool, about 5 bucks at autozone.

PS: Make sure you check the relay as well (start with the easiest fix first and work your way up to the pump) you can just take your ABS relay and try it in place of the fuel pump one, dont drive it like that just see if it starts fine when you do that, just make sure that its the same relay as your fuel pump(the numbers on the front match up)

Thanks...I will try it.....You have the right idea..to avoid changing out the pump when it might not be the issue...

Definitely check the fuel pump relay first. I was gonna say check the shutoff switch in the cab but I don't see that being a problem..

You can find the electrical wires to your fuel pump and poke them with a test probe to see if you're getting power to it while someone sits in the cab and cycles the key forward. Don't crank it over..

Fuel pumps bad, i'll almost bet on it, happens a lot on 01's

Well check that switch near the foot of the passanger. It might look fine but wiggle it up and see if it works. This happened to me last year. Replaced with a new fuel pump and still didnt start. Wiggled switch and it started right up :grumpy:

Hey! I had some similar problems with the FP. There is a inertia switch located above where the passengers feet are located and this magical switch has a reset button. I just pressed it and my truck started up !!!! Upon further inspection and 3 resets later I noticed the connector going into the switch was melted. I just cut out the switch and soldered the wires together. It has been 4 months and no more problems. Thanks RF!
